Introduc+on
General statement of the problem
Why is this problem important?
What are the theore+cal implica+ons of the study?
Ra+onale for the study
What results did I expect, and why did I expect them?
Review of the literature
Relevant earlier works, logical con+nuity
Treat controversial issues fairly
Specic purposes, research ques+ons, hypotheses
Reviewing research literature
Read broadly enough to uncover present
trends and controversies per+nent to the
topic

Read selec, vely enough to discover gaps in

exis+ng knowledge and and iden+fy problems
needing further study.

Some+mes a topic might change en+rely as

you discover new areas for inves+ga+on
A solid literature review should allow you
to

Verify that you have chosen an appropriate topic

Dene and rene aspects of your own study
Begin to es+mate the resources your study might
require
Establish the importance of your topic and jus+fy
the eort you will expend.
Four step funnel
History of research problem

Theore+cal and prac+cal importance of the

research problem

Address deciencies in current knowledge

Describe purpose of present research

Tips for wri+ng a literature review
Obtain ar+cles
Organize ar+cles (Cita+on management tool) pertaining to the problem you
wish to inves+gate in a chronological sequence. All of the ar+cles should be
related to a unied theme or topic you wish to inves+gate.
Use on-line, applica+on, organiza+on sooware

RefWorks ($100)

As a class, please discuss and oer sugges+ons to fellow classmates

techniques for nding ar+cles.
Which databases and search engines do you prefer?
What can you do if an ar+cle you need is unavailable?
Order it online
Email the corresponding author and ask for a copy of it.
Keywords
Appropriate use of keywords can greatly expand your
search
You may use the name of the actual topic
You may combine several keywords with + or and
or or
You may search an authors name and/or year of
publica+on
If anyone is having trouble nding ar+cles, now is the
+me to speak up and ask your classmates, your
faculty, your supervisors, your commiLee
More +ps..
Use the ar+cles at the top of your list to
provide a historical context

Your goal is not to reproduce what the

authors said in the ar+cle. Instead, you should
interpret the literature as to establish a new
case or ra+onale for what you wish to
accomplish in your own research.
Outline
Work from an outline while making sure to
establish the rela+onship of each ar+cle to
one another

Unless ar+cles can be shown to be specically

related to your research problem, they should
not be included.
Funnel
Remember that your literature review should be
shaped like a funnel
As you progress through the introduc+on sec+on
of a research paper, the ar+cles you discuss
should be increasingly relevant to the specic
problem you wish to inves+gate, culmina+ng in a
purpose statement.
Read as many literature reviews as possible to
study the way they are structured!
