Addition:
Find a common whole (LCM)
Add
Is it improper? Change to a mixed number (take out the wholes).
Is that your final answer? Can you divide both the top and bottom by
10, 5, 2, 3? Keep going until you can not divide evenly.

Subtraction:
Use the number line (jump from your smaller fraction to your larger).
Add your jumps (see above for the steps to add)

Multiplication:
Fraction X Fraction
Multiply tops by tops and bottoms by bottoms (Need a model/visual?
Build an array)
Is it improper? Change to a mixed number (take out the wholes).
Is that your final answer? Can you divide both the top and bottom by
10, 5, 2, 3? Keep going until you can not divide evenly.

Place the whole number over one and multiply (see above for steps to
multiply fraction by fraction)

Fraction X Mixed Number


Change mixed number to an improper fraction
Multiply fraction by fraction (see steps above)
Is it improper? Change to a mixed number (take out the wholes).
Is that your final answer? Can you divide both the top and bottom by
10, 5, 2, 3? Keep going until you can not divide evenly.

Open array (split whole number and fraction)
Multiply each piece
Add up the pieces (see above for steps to add)
Is it improper? Change to a mixed number (take out the wholes).

Operating with Decimals

Addition and Subtraction


Line up the decimals and place values
Place zeroes so that all numbers have a buddy
Add or subtract like normal. Dont forget your decimal point!

Multiplication
Count the decimal places in each number (Put them in a box)
Remove decimal points
Multiply like normal
Starting from the right, count the number of decimal places in the box
and place your decimal point at that location
