The authors dedicate this book to Steve Terrys late wife, Sally
West Johnson. Sally was a very gifted editor and writer, who un-
erringly could make any sentence tighter and crisper. Her work
in 1991 took what had been a long newspaper series about the
Hoff years and shaped it into what eventually became the struc-
ture for this book. Sallys great skill was to bring clarity and
structure to any newspaper story or magazine article. Also, for
many years Sally was a mentor to many aspiring journalists. To
Steve, Sally was a loving companion, newspaper colleague, wife,
and mother of their son, Will. She died before this book was
published, but we know she would be pleased that it is done, be-
cause without her it would not have been.
Samuel B. Hand also dedicates this book to his wife, Harriet;
and Anthony Marro dedicates it to his wife, Jacqueline Cleary
Marro, and his daughter, Alexandria Cleary Marro.
