SOIL MIXES (Ref:Dwg L002)
Excavate for formation levels & trenches, soil filling grade with mixture as described in Specification.
Planting Soil Mix: Mix topsoil with the following soil amendments and fertilizers in the following quantities:
1 1. Tree Pits :
a. 1/10 composted sewage sludge.
b. 1/10 pine bark fines.
349 CUM
c. 1/5 coarse sand.
d. 3/5 topsoil.
2. Planting Beds-Shrubs:
a. 1/3 topsoil.
b. 1/3 excavated soil.
2 c. 1/6 compost. 1,286 CUM
d. 1/6 coarse sand.
e. Amendments required in soil analysis report.
2. Lawn:
a. 1/3 topsoil.
b. 1/3 excavated soil.
4 c. 1/6 compost. 846 CUM
d. 1/6 coarse sand.
e. Amendments required in soil analysis report.
A. Bonemeal: Commercial, raw or steamed, finely ground; a minimum of 4 percent nitrogen and 10 percent phosphoric acid.
B. Superphosphate: Commercial, phosphate mixture, soluble; a minimum of 20 percent available phosphoric acid.
C. Commercial Fertilizer: Commercial-grade complete fertilizer of neutral character, consisting of fast- and slow-release nitrogen, 50 percent derived from natural
organic sources of urea formaldehyde, phosphorous, and potassium in the following composition:
1. Composition:
a. At time of planting: Nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and minor elements in amounts recommended in soil reports from a qualified soil-testing agency.
b. During Maintenance period: Commercial fertilizer for ornamental trees, shrubs and ground cover; 10-6-4; with full range of minor elements.
D. Slow-Release Fertilizer: Granular or pelleted fertilizer consisting of 50 percent water-insoluble nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the following composition:
1. Composition: Nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium in amounts recommended in soil reports from a qualified soil-testing agency.
B. Excavation:
1. Excavate circular pits with sides sloped inward. Trim base leaving center area raised slightly to support root ball and assist in drainage. Do not further disturb
base. Scarify sides of plant pit smeared or smoothed during excavation.
a. Excavate approximately one and one half times as wide as ball diameter for balled and burlapped, container-grown, and fabric bag-grown stock.
b. Excavate at least 6 inches (150 mm) wider than root spread and deep enough to accommodate vertical roots for bare-root stock.
2. If subdrainage pipe is shown or required under planted areas, excavate to top of porous backfill. Do not damage fabric barrier(s).
5.2 1,277 Cum
3. Subsoil removed from excavations may be used as backfill.
C. Drainage: Notify Architect if subsoil conditions evidence unexpected water seepage or retention in tree or shrub pits.
D. Percolation test: Where no planting subdrainage system is indicated, immediately following rough grading and prior to planting, identify a typical planting location
and excavate a tree pit. Fill with water to a depth of 12 inches. Report length of time for water to percolate completely into the soil. Within 6 hours, in the presence
of the Architect, again fill the pit with water to a depth of 12 inches. If water does not completely percolate within 9 hours, submit a proposal for drainage system or
soil penetrant. Do not proceed with planting until a determination is made by the Architect.
