Truth or Consequence

This document provides instructions for an ESL classroom activity called "Truth or Consequence" where students take turns answering questions or doing tasks. The activity aims to practice the simple past tense and interrogative pronouns while allowing students to freely speak about experiences. Students sit in a circle and take turns spinning a bottle to determine who asks and answers questions selected randomly from cards. Questions prompt students to share stories about first loves, embarrassing moments, regrets, and other experiences. Answering questions is optional, as students can choose to do a silly consequence instead, like making declarations or dancing. The goal is for all students to participate by speaking at least once.

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCE

Andria and Catherine

Level: Intermediate/ Students from High School- 2nd or 3rd grade.

Goals: Students will be able:
- To practice the Simple Past;
- To review the interrogative pronouns;
- To freely speak about their own experiences.
Length: 30 minutes
Material: an empty bottle; ten Truth or Consequence cards; a radio.
Step 1: Students sit in a circle. An empty bottle and the cards(see attachments)
are put in the middle of the circle.
Step 2:
One student turns the bottle. The person to whom the bottom of the
bottle points is the one who makes the question while the student on the
opposite side is the one who answers it.
The "questioner" student picks up one card and reads the question
aloud. The "questioned" one must choose between telling the true and
commenting on that topic or doing "the consequence". If he opts for the second
option, he must do what the card brings as a consequence.
Step 3:
After that, the bottle is turned again and other students play the
questioner and the questioned. If, by chance, the bottle points towards a
student who has already been the interrogated one, he can choose somebody
else to answer. It is important to have everybody talking at least one time. While
students are talking, others are free to inquiry more questions about the topic.

Attachment: (cards)
* If the class is too big, the teacher will need to divide the students in small
groups, so that everybody gets a chance to talk.
