Pancha-Brahma Mantras
Below are the Pancha-Brahma mantras that come to us from the Taittiriy a Arany aka (X.1 7 -
21 ) of the Krsna Y ajurv eda. The tenth chapter of the Taittiriy a Arany aka is also called the
Mahanaray an Upanishad. Therefore, these mantras can also be said to belong to the
Mahanaray ana Upanishad (1 7 -21 ). These mantras are used frequently in Shiv a Pujas, and
alluded to often in Shiv a worship protocols and manuals. The Pancha-Brahma mantras ex alt
Shiv a through His fiv e forms (faces) Sady ojata, Vamadev a, Aghora, Tatpurusa and Isana.
The fiv e faces or forms of Shiv a represent the fiv e functions or acts (panchakrity as)
creation, sustenance, dissolution, concealing grace and rev ealing grace, respectiv ely . The
fiv e forms or faces of Shiv a also correspond to the fiv e sy llables in the holy pentasy llabic
mantra na-mah-shi-v -y a. Note that the Tatpurusa mantra is but the Rudra Gay atri.
