YOUNG DRIVER
Oliver Niesewand, 22
0 I passed through my test three weeks ago, so I
00 still drive with a certain amount of caution. My mother
1 gave to me her car, and I get some help with tax and
2 insurance because it's so much expensive. I think
3 cost and crime are the most negative aspects of
4 owning a car, and you have to realise about how
5 powerful and possibly dangerous a car can be. I
6 enjoyed the learning to drive and my instructor was
7 very patient and uncritical. I've been noticed that
8 other drivers are not as patient as when you don't
9 have L-plates* any more. I haven't had any accidents
10 or near misses yet - the worst thing that could happened
11 was when I broke out a wing mirror during a lesson.
12 A near miss is probably a good thing because it
13 makes you to be more careful. Safe driving has a lot to
14 do with attitude. In my opinion, 17 is too young to
15 begin learn to drive. Perhaps 20 would be a better age.
3. Read the text below and think of the word which best fits each space. Use only one word in each space. There is an
example at the beginning (0).
FIRST READ THE SMALL PRINT
When you take out travel insurance, you usually just accept the little form which the clerk
pushes (0) ...across the counter. You fill it all (1) make out a cheque
and, (2) return, you receive a thin sheet of paper with very small print. But
nobody ever expects that anything could really (3) wrong. It always
(4) to someone else! Well, my family is that someone else!
I (5) never forget the phone call from my daughter who was
(6) holiday abroad. It began: 'Mummy, something awful's happened.' Her
hotel room (7) been burgled and all her luggage stolen. Fortunately, she
was insured and she reported the matter (8) the police at the time. The
insurance company, however, wanted not only the police report, (9) also
receipts for everything stolen (10) they would recognise her claim.
(11) nearly all her clothes were from a chain store, we had no receipts.
Other items stolen had (12) gifts - a camera from her grandparents two
years (13) a necklace from her boyfriend. It took (14) nearly
three months of writing letters to get any offer from the company at all.
A fight like this teaches you one very important lesson - before you take out insurance,
make (15) you read the small print!
A weekend in Tenerife
The weekend was a disaster. Have you ever (0) bedVt to Tenerife? Given a choice between Siberia and a four-star hotel
in Playa de las Americas, I'd choose Siberia any day. Playa de las Americas is the name of the resort
(1) we stayed. Laurence chose it from the travel agent's brochures (2) it's near the
airport and we were due to arrive late (3) night. Well, that seemed to make sense but it turned
(4) to be the most awful place you can imagine. Playa is the Spanish (5) beach, but
the resort doesn't have a beach, not what I'd call a beach, anyway - just a strip of black mud. (6) the
beaches in Tenerife are black because the whole island is basically an enormous lump of coke and the beaches are made
(7) powdered coke; it's volcanic, you see. Apparently, only a few years (8) it was
(ust a barren shoreline and then some businessmen decided to build a resort (9) and now it's
Blackpool beside the Atlantic. There's a main street (10) is always choked with traffic and lined with
the most vulgar bars, cafes and discos you ever saw, with deafening music and flashing lights and greasy cooking
smells all round the clock. (11) from that there's nothing except block after block of high-rise hotelsand apartments. It's
a concrete nightmare with (12) any trees or grass. We didn't realize how horrible (13) was immediately because it was
dark (14) we arrived and the taxi from the airport
took (15) by what seemed to me to be a suspiciously roundabout route.
YOUNG SKATER
I was born and brought (0) W?. just outside Bristol and (1) the
ages of seven and fourteen, I spent far more of my waking hours on the ice rink
(2) I did at home.
When I was six, we went to Bournemouth on holiday and saw an ice show and from

VILLAGE LIFE
The land around their village is rocky and the soil is poor. Julia and her husband worked
hard in the fields but they could not produce (0) ...ENOUGH.. food to feed their family
or buy the things they (1) Julia's husband was forced to look
(2) work in South Africa. There was no work in Lesotho because there
were so (3) factories and businesses. Many families in Lesotho are
(4) the same situation. (5) a man has a lot of land or
animals, he has no choice (6) to leave his wife and children and get
a job (7) from home.
Julia's husband (8) to get home and see his family about once a year
but the children are growing up fast and they (9) recognise their father.
Their mother has to (10) all the family decisions. She is the one who keeps
them (11) order, makes sure they do not go hungry and comforts them
when they are sick or unhappy. Julia's parents help (12) looking after
the youngest children and (13) some of the housework but they are
(14) weak to work in the fields now. Julia has to plough, sow, weed and
harvest the land (15) herself, while she waits anxiously for the next
envelope containing money from her husband.
BALLOON RIDE
Larry Walters intended to 0) make . only a short trip when he took off from
Long Beach, California, 1) in a garden chair which was attached

4) secured his chair to the ground broke and he shot up to 16,000 feet.
5) startled airline pilots eyed the strange flying machine, Larry began to
6) a little chilly. He shot at several of the balloons 7) an
airgun he 8) taken with him and began to descend. When the balloon
ropes became entangled in a power line, Larry was finally 9) to return to
earth after more than an hour.
Larry 10) rescued, uninjured, as his chair hung from the power lines. 'The
part that was frightening 11) the last 300 feet, with the rooftops coming
up so fast', he said afterwards. 'I fulfilled my dream but I wouldn't do this again
12) anything.'
The US Federal Aviation Administration is determined to see that he does not.
An inspector said, 'We know that he broke some part of the law. As 13)
as we decide which part it is. some charge 14) be filed. If he
15) a pilot's licence, we'd suspend that, but he hasn't.'
