Topic: Gotong-royong
Example 1
On 26 February this year, the Teen Club conducted a gotong royong at Kampung Melor
playground. The main aim of the gotong-royong was to clean and beautify the compound of the
playground. About fifty of the members with two club advisors, showed up and gathered at the
playground at 8.30 am.
The playground was in bad condition. The grass was very long. There was rubbish everywhere.
There was rubbish even on the slides and under the swings. We divided our duties systematically and got
to work. Members were divided into a few groups. We mowed the grass. We trimmed the bushes and
cleared away all dead leaves and branches. Then, we swept and cleaned the grounds. One group painted
the swings, slides and see-saws with bright and cheerful colours. Our advisors helped them.
At 1.30 pm, we all took a break and had our lunch. The residents of Kampung Melor generously
sponsored our meal for that day. We had a mouth watering nasi beriani with refreshing ice tea to
quench our thirst.
After that, we fixed some new large litter bins at the playground. Another group planted pretty
plants and flowering shrubs along the sides of the field. Finally, we fixed a large sign at the edge of the
playground. The sign read, Keep Our Playground Clean.
We finished our work by 5.30 pm. By that time, all of us were worn out. However, it was a
worthy effort as the playground looked pretty, neat and tidy. A sense of satisfaction filled our heart. We
had done a good job and a good deed for the community. We really hope that the community especially
the residents of Kampung Melor will do their parts to maintain the playground by not littering.
Example 2:
Last Saturday, the members of the English Language Society held gotong-royong at our school.
The aim of the project was to clean up the school compound. The gotong-royong began at 7.30 in the
morning.
The Form five students cleared up the rubbish left around in the school compound. While, other
students set to work, clearing and washing the drains.
Two of the English Language Society members had brought lawn mowers and began mowing the
grass on the school field. The form one students set to work on the gardens, weeding and trimming the
bushes and also clearing away all dead leaves and branches.
Next, the form three students washed the dusty window of the classrooms, staffroom, library
and the science laboratories. A few students decided to do something about the school gate that had the
peeling paint and was beginning to rust in some places. They scraped away the old paint and gave the
new gate a new coat of black paint.
By the time the gotong-royong ended, some of the society members were worn out but the
school was spick and span. We gathered at the school canteen for the delicious refreshments provided
by the teachers. We were happy that our school looks nice and clean again and we promised will always
take a good care of our beloved school.

welcomed by the residents of the orphanage. After that they were divided into groups. The boys pulled
out the weeds. The teachers planted the flowers in pots. Meanwhile, the girls collected the rubbish,
empty bottles and cans. They put them in the plastic bags. Then they buried the unwanted things for
they could be breeding places for mosquitoes.
After they had finished their work, they were provided food and drinks. The teacher praised
them for their good job. They really enjoyed doing their work. They were tired but happy. Indeed it was a
memorable day for them.

Example 5
SMK Simpang Rengam held a grand National Day celebration on 31st August this year at Kluang
Stadium. History Club, as the organiser had done a great job.
The celebration began with a march past by the school band. The boys in the band put on red
uniform and a cap. They played beautiful music. Everyone applauded loudly when they entered the
stadium and walked past the audiences.
This was followed by the raising of Malaysian flag. Everyone stood up straight and proudly sang
our National Anthem and patriotic songs accompanied by the music played by our talented school band.
Then, a few cultural shows were performed by a group of students. They came up on a platform
built in the middle of the stadium and danced traditional dances like zapin and inang gracefully.
Another group of students also came up and sang some traditional songs like ghazal and lagu asli
sweetly.
The celebration ended with rhythmic gymnastics. Our schools gymnasts put up some of their
gymnastic acts accompanied by classical and modern music. They used colourful ribbons and hoops. It
was fascinating.
Everybody including our Education District Officer who came to give closing speech was
speechless. The National Day Celebration would not be forgotten for many years to come.
