    Civil War Who Are We?

    Goals & Objectives


    Students will be able to describe who the leaders and soldiers of the Civil War show what
    the Civil War was like.

    California State Content Standards

    8.10.5 Study the views and lives of leaders (e.g., Ulysses S. Grant, Jefferson Davis, Robert E.
    Lee) and soldiers on both sides of the war, including those of black soldiers and regiments.

    Common Core Literacy Standards


    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.6. Identify aspects of a text that reveal an authors point of view
    or purpose (e.g. loaded language, inclusion or avoidance of particular facts).

    Driving Historical Question

    How do the views of leaders and the soldiers of the Civil War paint a picture of what the
    Civil War era was like?

    Lesson Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Hook/Accessing Prior Knowledge) Time: 5 -8

    I display 2 questions on the board for students to think about. Question 1: What do you
    think life as a soldier during the Civil War was like? Consider things like food, shelter, daily
    health, etc. Question 2: How are Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis important to the
    history of Civil War. Using just your prior knowledge on these two men, what do you know
    about them?
    Students will quickly write down what comes to mind with these questions and then share
    with a neighbor what they wrote. The last bit of time will be dedicated to a mini discussion
    about what they spoke about in their pairs.

    Vocabulary (Content Language Development) Time: 5 minutes


    Vocabulary will be highlighted in the PowerPoint and in the notes. In the notes, there will
    be space for students to fill in a definition. I will take a few minutes before diving in to the
    lesson though to quickly go over the words and give a short definition verbally so that
    students will know a little about the words that they will be learning during the lecture.

    Content Delivery (Method of Instruction) Time: 15 minutes


    Students will follow along in their notes and fill in the blanks/boxes in their guided notes.
    When we stop for questions that are embedded into the presentation, they will answer
    these questions in their notes. Students will be actively listening and participating to any
    and all discussions that take place.

    Student Engagement (Critical Thinking & Student Activities) Time: 10 minutes


    Students will answer the questions posed in the guided notes and the last 2-3 minutes, they
    will discuss with the elbow buddy what they wrote for one question and pose at least one
    additional point that was not mentioned in their partners answer. Students in the same
    pairs may not use the same questions.

    Lesson Closure Time: 5 minutes


    Students will complete a 321 Exit Ticket so that I can see what they learned and still need
    help on. The last slide in the PowerPoint will have a picture of what that looks like.

    Accommodations for English Learners, Striving Readers and Students with Special Needs
    Guided notes are provided for students to follow along with and pictures to match the
    slides. There will be times where we will pause for reflection in the notes and students will
    write their opinion in their notes, this will help them practice getting their ideas from their
    head to paper.
