(b). Either Below (Or) Above the Proportional limit
(c). Before the yield Point
(d). After the Fracture Point
PART C (5 x 14 = 70 Marks)
21. (a) Find the direct stress distribution in a thin walled Z section, whose thickness is t,
height h, flange width h/2 and subjected to a positive bending moment MX.
(OR)
(b). A beam of angle section 150*100*10 mm is simply supported over a span of 1.6 m
with 150 mm leg vertical. A UDL of 10 KN/m is applied throughout the span. Find
the bending stresses at A, B and C by Principal Moment of Inertia method?

22. (a) Find the shear flow distribution and locate the shear center for the section shown in
figure 2 (a). Each stringer has an area of 4 cm2 and the section is subjected to a
vertical shear load of 50 KN.
(OR)
(b). A cross section is in the shape of an unbalanced I beam shown in the figure 2 (b).
Derive the following formula for the distance e from the center line of the web to
3t f (b 22 b 12)
the shear centre S. e=
h tw + 6 t f (b 1+ b 2)

23. (a) Find the shear flow and twist per unit length of the section shown in figure 3 (a).
Take G = 25 x 105 N/cm2 and Radius, R = 10 cm, T = 2000 N cm.
(14)
(OR)
(b). The figure 3 (b) shows a single cell beam with four flanges. Find the internal shear
flow force system when the beam carries the external load of 2000 N as shown.
Given t = 0.1 cm.

24. (a) Check whether the box beam shown in the figure 4 (a) will withstand the load
without buckling. Also find the Margin of safety. Given P1= P2= 5000 N; Uniform
skin thickness = 1.5 mm; Area of each stringer = 2 cm2. Assume skin is effective in
bending. For a/ b= 2; kc= 5; ks= 6.5.
(OR)
(b) Derive the differential equation governing the buckling of a thin flat plate.
(OR)
(b). A cantilever beam shown in figure 5 (b) carries the concentrated loads as shown.
