recaptured for the recapture of Martin Luther King Jr. This is very significant because MLK did a lot for the black community and was doing but was killed by this man. 1978 Jan 8 Harvey milk first personally gay person to be elected to the public office in San Francisco. He later was assassinated 11 months after. This was very significant for the gay community because it helped them know that they were not alone. 1979 Oct 17 Mother Teresa is awarded the nobel prize. She helped the poorest in the poorest of the slums of India. This was very significant because mother Teresa helped a lot of poor and she was finally recognized. 1980 John Lennon was shot. A very influential musician. This surprise a lot of people around the world because John Lennon was a very influential and peaceful artist and was in the most famous boy band. 1981 Sandra Day O'Connor is the first female in the supreme court. This opened up opportunities for women because women were not looked at the same as men this open new doors for women that wanted to be somebody important it gave them inspiration. 1982 Apr 19 Sally ride became the first female astronaut in space to ever go to space. This is very important because it open new jobs and a lot of other jobs for women. 1983 JULY 8 Super Mario Bros first released for nintendo. This is very significant because mario became the biggest video game and generations of people grew up playing mario. 1984 U.S.S.R performs one of its first nuclears underground. This cost a lot of controversy in the countries because now other nations also wanted to develop their own nuclear weapons. 1985 Jan 21 Ronald Reagan was sworn into congress and this was very important because he did a lot for the US and the people that live in it. 1986 Jan 28 The Challenger was a nasa shuttle carrying 7 astronauts. This was very significant because it showed people how going to space and traveling to places we don't really know about them can be very dangerous and cost lives of innocent people. 1987 Two men traveled across the Atlantic ocean.They were the first to do that in a hot air balloon. This was very significant because it showed people that if they want to do something they always wanted to do it they should go out there and do it.
