Chapter 1. Introduction
Au SAE J1939 Interpreter (Figure 1-1), a palm-size handheld device with a CAN bus Interface and a RS232 Interface,
is capable of interpreting the most popular SAE J1939 signals to a RS232 ASCII String (Similar to AT command
string). It can be connected to J1939 network and +12V power supply at the DB9 male BUS interface. The pin-out of
the DB9 male "BUS" Interface is illustrated in Figure 1-2.

Support multiple SAE J1939 defined Source Address (for Engine, Transmission and ABS) and can be
configured in field
Ease of use: No software setup experience or CAN protocol configuration skill required.
In-field license upgrade capability with Au License Management Tool. The Value package edition, Engine
Basic Edition and Engine Premium Edition can be easily upgraded to Vehicle Platinum Edition.
In-field firmware updating capability with Au Bootloader technology.
Annual support and firmware upgrade services are available (SVS-ITPJ1939).
Custom design is available upon request with low cost.
Chip solution is available.
CAN bus baud rate (default 250K bps) field configurable: 1M, 500K, 125K, 62.5K
1 DB9 Male "BUS" Interface (Figure 2):
Au Group Electronics provide a few kinds of CAN cables (Part#: CBL-CAN-01, CBL-CAN-485-01, CBL-CAN-
03 and CBL-CAN-04) to work with Au J1939 Interpreter.
Note: Those cables are optional items for Au J1939 Interpreter in different applications, and are sold separately.
Please refer to Table 2 for detail information.
1 RS232 Interface: 11 baud rates are supported and can be changed in the field; default baud rate: 115.2K; other
baud rate (bps) are field configurable: 300; 1.2K; 2.4 K; 4.8 K; 9.6 K; 14.4K; 19.2K; 28.8K; 38.4K; 57.6K;
It is used to output the received J1939 signal in an ASCII String format (Similar to AT Command String). It can
also be used for in-field firmware update (115.2K only), license management (115.2K only), etc.
Au J1939 Interpreter can be connected to RS232 (serial) port of PC either through a RS232 serial extension
cable (Part#: CBL-RS232-01) or through a USB to RS232 serial convert cable (Part #: CBL-USB-232).

AT <Abbreviation>=<X.Y><Unit><CR>< LF>
or
AT <Abbreviation>=<character><CR>< LF>
It always started with AT ", consist of character of A, T and followed with space character, then Abbreviation of
specific J1939 parameter, an equal sign "=", then value and unit for digital parameters or status (such as ON / OFF or
Disable / Enabled or Claimed / NotClaimed). Every single AT Command end with a carriage return <CR> and a line
feed <LF>. In this document, <CR> and \r both represent carriage return; <LF> and \n both represent Line
Feed.
The description, SPN (Suspect Parameter Number) of the each parameter, unit (if applicable), resolution, and
repetition of each supported J1939 signal is explained here, one or more examples will be given for each parameter.
*The repetition rate of each parameter is defined by SAE Standard, it represent the worst case scenario and is
for reference only. Actual rate on different vehicles may be different.
