Purpose
To calculate the elastic modulus (E) ofthe soil materials at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit 3 Site
(CCNPP). Different correlations and data from laboratory tests and geophysical survey are used in the analysis to
determine the elastic modulus. Recommended E values for geotechnical analysis are also provided.
Background
The site geology at CCNPP is comprised of deep coastal plain sediments underlain by bedrock at
approximately 2,500 ft below the ground surface. The soils consist of marine and fluvial deposits. The upper
400 ft of these soils are the subject of the CCNPP subsurface investigation. These soils are divided into the
following principal strata:
Stratum lIb is further refined with additional sublayers as a result of localized zones of cemented sand and
poorly cemented sand.

Methodology
Shear modulus (G) and elastic modulus (E) are estimated for each soil strata using the following procedures:
Geophysical test results: Shear wave velocities (Vs), P-wave velocities (Vp), and Poisson's ratios from ten
borehole surveys are used to estimate the shear modulus (G) and Young's modulus (E) at depth intervals
between 1.6 ft and 1.7 ft below the ground surface. The geophysical survey data are grouped based on the
soil strata obtained from Ref. 2. Average G and E values and their corresponding standard deviations of each
soil layer are estimated. The G and E values estimated based on the geophysical tests correspond to very low
strain values; therefore, they are reduced to account for the material's strain softening due to higher strains.

Shear modulus is calculated based on the shear wave velocities: G = P V s2 ; Young's modulus is calculated
based on elastic theory: E = 2G(l +v).
Pressuremeter testing data obtained from two borehole locations is used to calculate the shear modulus (G)
and elastic modulus (E) for each soil layer. The initial modulus (Menard Method) is used to estimate G and
E values. Results from Pressuremeter testing correspond to high strain values, therefore, it is expected that
the elastic modulus values fall in the lower bound range.
Dilatometer testing data obtained from two borehole locations is used to estimate the elastic modulus (E) for
each soil layer.
Elastic modulus is calculated using different correlations as a function of corrected SPT N-values and
undrained shear strength (su):
Results from all procedures, including the average, maximum and minimum values, are presented in Table 6.
Recommended E values to be used in the geotechnical static analysis are also presented in Table 6.
Deformation modulus or Oedometer modulus (E = limy) of Stratum IIc Chesapeake Clay/Silt is estimated
based on consolidation parameters: Cy, Ce , Cr , my and eo. This modulus can be used when calculating
settlements using elastic theory. When used in this context, E is not strictly an elastic constant. It represents
the response of the soil to a single loading applied over a long period of time. Therefore, significantly lower
values than the Young's modulus values are expected.
Design Inputs
1. Soil profiles from Ref. 2 are used in this analysis. Stratum IIc Chesapeake Clay/Silt is considered as a single
layer and no further subdivision is included in this calculation (interbedded sand layers).
2. Geophysical test information is obtained from Ref. 1. The survey was performed in 13 borings across the site.
Borings: B-301, B-304, B-307, B-318, B-323 and B-423 are considered within the Unit 3 Area; borings: B-401,
B-404, B-407 and B-418 are considered within the Construction Layout Area 1(CLA-I); borings: B-773, B-786
and B-821 correspond to the Intake and Pump house areas and are not considered in this analysis.
3. Dilatometer testing data is obtained from Ref. 8. The survey was performed in two borings: B-301 and B-701.
4. Pressuremeter testing data is obtained from Ref. 9. The survey was performed at two borings: B-301 and B-
701; only the test performed at boring B-301 extends to the entire depth ofthe boring.
5. Corrected SPT N-values, over-consolidation ratios (OCR) and undrained shear strength values are obtained
from Ref. 3, 6 and 7, respectively. For this analysis, the undrained shear strength values (su) are estimated based

only on laboratory test results. Correlations with SPT N-values are not considered for layers with clayey
materials.
6. Poisson's ratios obtained from the geophysical survey are considered inadequate for the analysis, particularly in
the sandy materials. Values tend to be relatively high (close to y = 0.5) for all layers as a result of an undrained
soil condition. Therefore, values based on standard engineering practice are used in the analysis: a drained
(effective) Poisson's ratio ofy = 0.30 for sandy layers, and an undrained Poisson's ratio ofy = 0.45 for clayey
layers (Ref. 12). A Poisson's ratio ofy = 0.35 is generally considered adequate for clayey layers in drained
conditions.
7. Consolidation parameters: Cy, Ce , Cr , my and eo are calculated in Ref. 6. Hydraulic conductivity for layer IIc is
obtained from Table 1-6 of Ref. 19.
8. The elastic modulus for backfill is obtained from six dynamic laboratory tests (pages: 257,274,291,308,325
and 342 of Ref 16). The elastic modulus is reduced 75% to account for the material softening as a result of
higher strains expected in static analysis. This reduction is based on engineering judgment. The resulting elastic
modulus for high strains corresponds to a lower bound for dense sand and gravel materials (Table 2-8; Ref. 15).
Results
Shear modulus and elastic modulus results based on: Geophysical tests, Pressuremeter tests, Dilatometer tests, and
correlations with corrected SPT N-values and undrained shear strength are presented in Tables 1.1 through 5.2. A
summary ofE values estimated based on different procedures is presented in Table 6. A wide range ofE values is
observed among the different procedures. In general, the results based on geophysical testing are in the upper bound
range (higher elastic modulus) and the results based on Pressuremeter testing fall in the lower bound range (lower
elastic modulus). E values based on the Dilatometer testing differ from the results of other procedures and
correlations. Therefore, they are not included in the average modulus values. The Elastic Modulus highest
variability was observed in Stratum lIb Chesapeake Cemented Sand and the lowest in Stratum IIc Chesapeake
Clay/Silt.
For Stratum IIc Chesapeake Clay/Silt, the deformation modulus (Oedometer modulus, Eoed ) is obtained based on
consolidation analysis results. This deformation modulus considers long term deformations due to the consolidation
process under drained conditions. Therefore, it is significantly lower than the elastic modulus (Young's modulus)
obtained using other procedures for undrained conditions. Eoed results are presented in Tables 7.2 and 7.3.
Based on the information used in this analysis, it is noted that there is lateral variation in the soil parameters within
the Site; particularly the results from boreholes that are relatively far from the Unit 3 area present different soil
properties and layer thickness. Therefore, it is recommended to use soil properties specific to the intended building
location in the geotechnical analysis.

Each stratum thickness is taken from the boring log information of Ref. 2. For the sublayers of stratum lIb, the transition between
sublayers is determined based on changes in Vs. Each stratum transition and elevation is identified by grouping Vs data in ranges.
Where the layer transition is different from the boring log information obtained from Ref. 2, the identified strata based on Vs data take
precedence in the analysis. Standard values of Poisson's ratios (Ref. 12) are used in the analysis instead of the ones derived from Vs
and Vp relationship.

Pressuremeter data is taken from Ref. 9. The thickness of each layer is based on the boring log information from
Ref. 2. For the sublayers of stratum lIb, the transition between sublayers is determined based on changes in E.
Where the layer transition is different from the boring log information obtained from Ref. 2, the identified strata
based on E data take precedence in the analysis. Standard values of Poisson's ratios are used in the analysis instead
ofthe ones derived from Vs and Vp relationship.
Table 2.1 Shear and Young's modulus based on pressuremeter testing - Boring B-301
(l) Data from boring B-701 was obtained only for certain elevations corresponding to stratum lIc
(2) Initial shear modulus are calculated in Ref. 9
(3) Young's modulus is calculated as: E = 2G(l +V)

Fig. 12.7 Results of high-stress, confined compression tests on several sands (data from Roberts,
1964).
The stress-strain curve for an initial loading generally exponent n has been.found to be very close to 2. For a
resembles a parabola. Hence the stress-strain relation- perfect packing of elastic spheres, this exponent would
ship may be expressed as be 3. The difference between the theoretical and actual
values for the exponent is the result of sliding among g:nd
(12.13) rearrangement of the particles within an actual soil.
Equation 12.13 implies that both secant modulus from
The coefficient C varies with the type of soil and its initial zero stress and the tangent modulus should increase as
void ratio. For a wide variety of soils, however, the .J a".
