Family Tree Project
Family Tree Project
Family Tree Project
1. Family Tree: Map your family tree on an 8 x 11 sheet of paper. Trace your ancestry as far back as possible. Family
trees must be neat/organized, diagramed by hand, finished in ink, and colored.
2. Interview: Interview at least two individuals within your family tree (one from each side, if possible). The purpose of
the interview is to gain a better understanding of your family history and how it impacts your social location.
Interviewing someone older than you may provide information regarding your ethnic background, heritage,
customs, beliefs, and/or reason for immigration.
During these interviews, inquire about any interesting ancestors you may have or any specific stories that help
distinguish your family. Interviews should be recorded. Interviews should consist of at least ten open-ended
questions covering ethnic heritage, biographical/childhood information, outlook on life, etc.
3. Transcript: A transcript is a written account of your interview where the dialogue is copied verbatim. Transcripts
should read like a script from a play.
4. Written Assignment: Submit a paper that discusses your particular social location and how your family has impacted
socialization to that place. Describe how these elements influence your self-concept, behavior, and future
opportunities. In your explanation, utilize your preferred theoretical perspective to describe yourself in social
context.
