1) Grade 440C stainless steel has a carbon content between 0.95-1.20% and 16-18% chromium. 2) At a tempering temperature of 204°C, 440C has a tensile strength of 2030MPa, yield strength of 1900MPa, and elongation of 4%. 3) 440C has a density of approximately 7650kg/m3, elastic modulus of 200GPa, and thermal conductivity of 24.2W/mK at 100°C.

Specified Properties
These properties are specified for bar product in ASTM A276. Similar but not necessarily identical
properties are specified for other products such as wire and forgings in their respective
specifications. These grades are not normally available in flat rolled or fluids products.

Possible Alternative Grades


Grade Why it might be chosen instead of 440C
440A/B Slightly softer and more corrosion resistant grade needed
440F High machinability required, with same hardness and hardenability as 440C
420 Lower strength and hardness needed than any of the 440 grades
416 Higher machinability required, and the much lower hardness and strength is still adequate
