Counterflow Vs Crossflow Cooling Towers

Crossflow and counterflow cooling towers have different configurations that impact their performance characteristics. Crossflow towers have horizontal air and water flow, requiring lower pumping needs but larger footprint. Counterflow towers have vertical counter-current air and water flow, needing higher pumping pressure but smaller footprint. The document recommends considering tower configuration, pumping needs, space constraints, noise limitations, and maintenance needs to determine the best type for each application.

COOLINGTOWERSELECTION:
Cooling towers aredesigned and manufactured in manysizes andconfigurations. Recognizingandunderstanding the

purpose of this bulletin is to highlight the differences between crossflow and counterflow cooling towers. Also a

Compared to crossflow towers, counter flow towers may require up to 0.5 bar / 7 PSI pressure at the water inlet to
achieveanefficientwaterdistributioninthetower.Thisleadstohigheroperationalcostsinpumpenergyconsumption.

AIRFLOWDISTRIBUTIONSYSTEMS
Cooling tower performance is also related to the amount of air moving through the tower and coming into direct
contactwiththewater.

In counterflow towers the air passes through the air inlet louvers and bends into the infill section. The inlet louvers
