Polymers have been with us since the beginning of time. Natural polymers include
such things as tar and shellac, tortoise shell and horns, as well as tree saps that
produce amber and latex. These polymers were processed with heat and pressure
into useful articles like hair ornaments and jewelry. Natural polymers began to be
chemically modified during the 1800s to produce many materials. The most
famous of these were vulcanized rubber, gun cotton, and celluloid. The first
synthetic polymer produced was Bakelite in 1909 and was soon followed by the
first semi- synthetic fiber, rayon, which was developed in 1911
Even with these developments, it was not until World War II that significant
changes took place in the polymer industry. Prior to World War II, natural
substances were generally available; therefore, synthetics that were being
developed were not a necessity. Once the world went to war, our natural sources of
latex, wool, silk, and other materials were cut off, making the use of synthetics
critical. During this time period, we saw the use of nylon, acrylic, neoprene, SBR,
polyethylene, and many more polymers take the place of natural materials that
were no longer available. Since then, the polymer industry has continued to grow
and has evolved into one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S. and in the
world.
Polymers are made up of many many molecules all strung together to form really
long chains (and sometimes more complicated structures, too).
What makes polymers so fun is that how they act depends on what kin ds of
molecules they're made up of and how they're put together. The properties of
anything made out of polymers really reflect what's going on at the ultra -tiny
(molecular) level. So, things that are made of polymers look, feel, and act
depending on how their atoms and molecules are connected, as well as which ones
we use to begin with! Some are rubbery, like a bouncy ball, some are sticky and
gooey, and some are hard and tough, like a skateboard.
The chemical reaction in which high molecular mass molecule s are formed from
monomers is known as polymerization. There are two basic types of
polymerization, chain-reaction (or addition) and step-reaction
(or condensation) polymerization.
Characteristics of Polymers
In the last few decades, polymers have emerged as a cost -effective, flexible
solution for numerous applications in the materials and chemical processing
industries. Because of their light weight, impact strength and processability at
relatively low temperatures, plastic and rubber parts have experienced enormous
growth in demand, despite surging oil prices and competition from alternatives
such as metals and glass. At the same time, global competition continue s to put
pressure on profit margins and time to market, pushing manufacturers to constantly
innovate in the areas of product performance and production efficiency
Every polymer has very distinct characteristics but most polymers have the
following general attributes.
In 1958 Qimat Rai Gupta left his education in midway and founded
an Electric trading operations in the electric wholesale market of Old
Delhi. With an investment of Rs.10000, he started Havell's
Industries. In 1971 Gupta Bought HALS Brand, and in next five
years he started the first manufacturing Plant at Tilak Nagar, New
Delhi of the Rewireable Switches and Changeover Switches in his
Kirti Nagar Plant, near New Delhi. In next few years Hals started to

The consumer electronics industry has witnessed a phenomenal growth over the
past few years. This growth can be attributed to the increasing effect of state of the
art electronic devices on the market. The consumer electronics industry is ushering
in the dawn of Convergence. It is the confluence and merging of hitherto separated
markets of digital-based audio, video and information technology, removing entry
barriers across the market and industry boundaries. This convergence of
technologies has resulted in a greater demand for consumer devices, be they
portable, in-home (mobile phones, digital camera) or in-car (CD/DVD players),
offering multiple functions.
The revolution brought about by Digital technology has enabled the consumer
electronics sector to profit from the growing interaction of digital applications such
as: camcorders, DVD player/recorder, still camera, computer monitor, LCD TV etc.
It has also witnessed the emergence of mobile telecommunications technology,
incorporating both digital visual and digital MP3 capabilities. The computer
industry has also benefited by being able to make its way into consumer's living
rooms. HDTV's with VGA connections and SD/MMC card slots, personal media
players, and Microsoft-based Media Center PCs have pushed the two industries
even closer together than before.
The overall revenue earned through the sale of audio, video and gaming con soles
constitutes the international consumer electronics market. The global sale of
consumer electronics is estimated to exceed all expectations to touch an all time
high of $135.4 billion in 2006, which indicates 8% increase from 2005. By the year
2008, sales are forecasted to soar up to $158.4 billion, up BY 65% over 2000.
The Asia Pacific region is the market leader wielding the biggest chunk of the
market, closely followed by Europe. The European market share is expected to take
a drubbing due to the growing demand for consumer durables in the Asia Pacific
consumer electronic market. Japanese companies have captured the consumer
electronics market. World famous brands such as Sony, Panasonic and Matsushita
are all owned by these Japanese manufacturers. Korean companies such as Samsung
and LG are all trying to join the Japanese bandwagon. Samsung can claim to be the
world's fastest growing electronic company.
