    Bangladesh experienced a trade deficit of $9.47 billion in 2016-17, which was an increase from the previous year's deficit of $6.46 billion. Exports increased slightly by 1.73% while imports rose more sharply by 9%. Remittances, a major source of foreign currency, declined by 14.45% which contributed to a shift from a current account surplus in 2015-16 to a deficit in 2016-17. Overall, Bangladesh saw its balance of payments position strengthen in 2016-17 with an overall surplus of $3.17 billion compared to $5.04 billion the previous year, supported by increases in foreign direct investment.
