Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar : The peoples poet

Sahir Ludhianvi (8 March 1921-25 Oct 1980)

Kal koi mujhko yad kare, kyu koi mujhe ko yad kare, Masroof zamana mere liye, kyu
waqt apna barbad kare. Sahir Ludhianvi, pen named of Abdul Hayee, the famous poet,
lyricist lost in the pages of history, curbed only till literature books.
Even after thirty-six years of Sahir Ludhianvis death his poetry touches and
mesmerizes the hearts of masses. Sahir settled in Lahore in 1943 and completed his
first published work in urdu namely Talkhiyaan (Bitterness) in 1945. We edited Urdu
magazines such as Adab-e-Lateef, Shahkar, Prithlari and Savera. With the passage of
time became a member of the Progressive Writers Association. However, is
contentious statements which played a vital role in promoting communism lead the
government of Pakistan to initiate an arrest warrant. Ultimately Sahir fled back to India
where he had his bungalow known as Parchiyaan (Shadows) where he dwelled till his
death.
Sahir as a lyricist enjoyed a much stable life financially. He began his debut with songs
from film Azaadi Ki Raah Par 1947. Sahir worked with music composers such as Ravi,
Rushan, Khayyan and Datta Naik. His work has also admired with music composers
such as Laxmikant- Pyarelal and S.D Burman. Sahir grabbed extreme fame from his
ghazals in Yash Chopra Production Kabhie kabhie
Kabhie Kabhie mere dil main khayal atta hai
Kay jaise tujhko banaya gaya hai mere liye
Another ghazal from the same film, Pal do pal ka shayar, is
his one piece of work that depicts how he has been forgotten
yet remembered, loved yet by individuals at the same time.
However, not to forget, Sahir was a well-known poet. His
poetry was a skill that he possessed ever since he was a
young lad in college years. Sahir had his own unique taste.
He was unique in relation to his counterparts in that he didn't
adulate Khuda (God), Husn (Beauty) or Jaam (Wine). Rather,
he composed severe yet touchy verses about the declining
estimations of society; the pointlessness of war and
governmental issues; and the control of consumerism over adoration. His affection
tunes tinged with distresses, communicated his acknowledgment that there were other
starker ideas more imperative than adoration.
Sahir's verse has a Faizian quality. Like Faiz, Sahir gave Urdu Poetry a scholarly
component that got the creative ability of the adolescent of the 1940's, 1950's and
1960's and mirrored the sentiments of the general population of the age. He stirred
individuals from an autonomy actuated pomposity. He would single out the self-serving
government official, the exploitative industrialist and the war-mongering super-powers.
Sahir, The peoples poet was never really acknowledged for his untiring unique piece
of work for the social welfare, instead was driven back to India, where he earned all
fame he was worthy off. As for now, Sahir is just known in small literary portions in
Pakistans Academia.
