Difference of Two Squares
Difference of Two Squares
PROOF:
= a2 - ab + ab - b2
= a2 - b2
If we can show that a quadratic expression is the difference of two squares, then we
can factorize it directly as a+b a - b .
Recall the square numbers are 1, 4, 9,16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 139, .....
EXAMPE 1:
SOLUTION
Now, x 2 16
Writing the terms as difference of two squares, we get
x 4
2 2
Factorizing, we get
x + 4 x - 4
x 2 16 x + 4 x - 4
