Create a true cinematic experience
Now you can create the most immersive and engaging cinematic experience imaginable with
Stewarts state-of-the-art CineCurve screen. Transform your clients dedicated home theater into
one that will rival commercial cinemas.
When the Erskine-Group in Smyma, GA designed this home theater in Houston TX, Stewart
provided a 14 CineCurve front projection screen with constant height and variable width masking
for increased enjoyment of cinemascope and 16:9 presentations in full 1080p resolution. The
special curved screen eliminates pincushion distortion of the anamorphic lens and reduces light spill
for a uniformly bright picture. Plus, Stewarts acoustically transparent Microperf X2 screen material
allows placement of speakers behind the screen for that extra touch of authenticity.

I
love the wow factor of themed home theaters. My love of old
science-fiction films and the Steampunk genre prompted me to
design my theater like the Nautilus from Disneys classic 1954 film,
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Rather than try to duplicate any particular
room of the submarine, I combined details and influences from the entire
vessel to create this one-of-a-kind theater.
This room was part of a larger remodel and home addition, and I pushed
out the walls of an existing bedroom to create an acoustically optimized
13-by-21-foot space. I used the bedroom closet for the A/V equipment and
media storage. The theater is adjacent to my home production office, so it also
serves as a screening room for my work as a visual effects supervisor.
I worked out the design with 3-D computer modeling, which let me
pre-visualize the space and view it from various vantage points. Then, I
printed out scale drawings of the various elements I planned to build.
After the framing was complete, I built another ceiling and a second
set of acoustically isolated walls inside the structural shell. To minimize
sound transmission from the theater to other areas of the house, I placed
insulation between the double walls. Next, I constructed the stage and
seating risers.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the project was fabricating the
props and set dressing, which allowed me to draw heavily on my
experience as a model builder and prop maker. The first thing I built was
the iconic iris viewport (behind the theater seating) from the Nautilus
salon, where Captain Nemo would open the iris to view the seas
underwater wonders. I cut the circular frame for the iris from layers of
medium density fiberboard (MDF), which is often used in the construction
of cabinets, including speaker enclosures. I textured and painted the
viewport ring to look like it had been cast in bronze. I cut the iris blades
from a metallic gray countertop laminate. Everyone who visits the theater
asks if the iris opens, but unfortunately only drywall is behind it.
I constructed the round ductwork where the wall meets the ceiling
from sections of 2-foot-diameter heavy cardboard tubing thats commonly

ceiling beams. I built the 10-foot-wide, curved projection screen using a finely
perforated window blind material. Folks in the do-it-yourself A/V
community have found this material to be acoustically transparent and
perfectly suited for use as a projection screen. I made the curved
framework for the screen from strips of wood that I glued together using a
curved form. I covered the resulting frame with black velvet and attached
the window blind material.
I purchased the speaker system for the theater long before the idea of
a dedicated theater space had gelled, so it was originally intended for use
in a multimedia family room. I selected Thiel floorstanding speakers
primarily for their outstanding sound but also for the superior fit and finish
of the cabinets. Unfortunately, these beautiful speakers are now hidden
from view behind the acoustically transparent screen.
Additional elements include enclosures for the projector and surround
speakers. Designed to look like the Magic Lantern, a Panasonic PT-AX200U
projector is disguised as the forerunner of the movie projector from the
late 1800s. The surround speakers appear to be mechanical equipment
with faux iron pipes running to them. The enclosure is made of fiberboard,
and the pipes are PVC. I textured both with sawdust and gave them
