Lab Report: Winogradsky Column

WEEK 1: The winogradsky column is a sort of simulation of a pond. As it is only the first week of the
experiment, there is not much to talk about, although there is a peculiar smell. The simulation is mostly
mud and water, with a few other things mixed in. By the end of the experiment, there should be a thriving
ecosystem inside of the pictured bottle.
WEEK 2: The column began to turn a color similar to green, although there was also a mixture of a dark
brown. There was a very sewer-like, sulfur smell. There was a beginning of a film forming, which will
most likely turn into a crust. There was a fair amount of condensation and the roof of the column was
impossible to see through. The green soil is most likely coming from the bacteria thriving in this
ecosystem.

WEEK 3: The column has begun to turn an even darker shade of green, almost black. The smell was
horrendous, and very sulfurous. The film is almost turned into a complete crust, but it is not quite there
yet. The condensation was abundant as you can see in the above picture. I predict that the soil will get
darker and the crust will be completely formed by next week.
WEEK 5: The column is very sulfurous in smell, and the colors are black and green. When you squeeze
the bottom, bubbles rise to the top, showing that oxygen is in fact on the bottom of the tube. The film is
growing harder and larger, almost complete. The condensation fully covered the plastic.
12/12/17: The column smells very sulfurous and outright bad. The column is very dark, almost black.
Bubbles were springing up, and the condensation was abundant on the film.
