Appendix B Pre-Construction Risk Assessment (Pcra) Matrix For Determining Infection Risk Class
To determine the infection risk class for construction, renovation or maintenance work, follow 3 steps:
Project Activity Types (A,B,C,D): Designations which define the amount of dust generated, the duration of
activity, and/or the amount of involvement with heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and water
systems during a project.
Risk Groups (Low, Medium, High, Highest): Designations of areas within UCIMC identified by the concern
for possible harm to patients and other occupants and the levels of protection required.
Construction Classification (Class I, II, III, IV): Designation which specifies measures necessary to safely
perform any facility construction, renovation or maintenance. This classification is determined by matching the
Construction Project Activity Type with the designated Risk Group in the matrix below.
RISK GROUP
Construction Classification (Class)
Low Risk Group Class I Class II Class II Class III
Medium Risk Group Class I Class II Class III Class IV
High Risk Group Class I Class II Class III Class IV
Highest Risk Group Class II Class III Class IV Class IV
Based on the infection risk class, varying degrees of infection prevention measures must be applied. These
measures are outlined in the PCRA form.
