    1. a) Briefly explain the principle of operation of circuit breaker. (4)


    b) What are amplitude comparators? (3)
    c) Explain in detail the two theories of arc interruption in CBs (6)

    2. a) Explain numerical relays and draw the flowchart of microprocessor
    based overcurrent relay. (7)
    b) ) Explain how arc is initiated and maintained in circuit breaker, when its
    contact separates (3)
    c) Explain the duality between amplitude and phase comparators (5)
    3. a) Explain the working of sf6 circuit breaker (5)
    b) Derive an expression for RRRV (5)
    c) With a neat sketch explain static over current differential relay (5)
    PART B (2×15 marks)
    (Answer any two)

    1. a) What are the causes of overvoltages arising on power


    system? (4)
    b) Write a note on surge diverters. (5)
    c) Explain how uniform distribution is done in distributor
    fed at both ends with equal and unequal voltages. (6)
    2. a) State different protective schemes provided for protection of generator (6)
    b) A 2-wire DC distributor AB is fed from both ends. At feeding point A ,
    the voltage is maintained at 230 V and at B at 235 V. The total length of the
    distributor is 200 m and loads are tapped off as under:
    25 A at 50 metres from A;
    50 A at 75 metres from A;
    30 A at 100 metres from A;
    40 A at 150 metres from A
    The resistance per kilometer of one conductor is 0.3 ohm. Calculate
    i)Currents in various sections of the distributor
    ii) Minimum voltage and the point at which it occurs. (5)
    c) Explain clearly the differential protection scheme for transformers (4)
    3. a) Differentiate radial and ring main systems (5)
    b) Differentiate concentrated and uniform loading in distribution system (5)
    c) A 2 wire DC distributor cable 1000 m long is loaded with 0.5 A/m.
    Resistance of each conductor is 0.05ohm/km. Calculate maximum voltage
    drop of the distributor fed from both ends with equal voltages of 220V.
    What is the minimum voltage and where it occurs. (5)
