HOW TO CHANGE INTERNET SHORTCUT (URL) ICON

Windows 95/98/NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7/8/8.1/2012:

1. Right-click on desired Internet Shortcut (.URL) file from Internet Explorer

-> Favorites menu -> desired Favorite icon, or Windows Explorer, Desktop or
Start Menu.
2. Select Open with Notepad or Properties dialog box.
3. If selected Properties dialog box: click Change Icon -> browse to location
of desired .CPL, .DLL, .EXE, .OCX, .ICL, .ICO file -> double-click on desired
icon -> click OK twice.
FYI: Default system icon (URL.DLL Icon number 0 if using MS IE
4/5/6/7/8/9/10/newer) for URL shortcut is highlighted ONLY IF you have never
changed it, and/or IF respective web site/server you saved Favorite icon from
does NOT have a customized favicon.ico file present. Favorite icon feature
does NOT work with MS IE 1/2/3/4/5/6!
4. If selected Open with Notepad: add if not present or modify if present
separate line under the [InternetShortcut] section (generic, case
insensitive):
IconFile=drive:\folder\filename.ext
5. Replace:
- drive = with actual drive/partition letter.
- folder = with actual (sub)folder/(sub)directory name.
- filename = with actual icon/icon library/executable file name.
- ext = with actual file extension (examples): .BMP, .CPL, .DLL, .EXE, .OCX,
.ICL, .ICO etc.
Path NOT necessary ONLY IF icon file present in system path (examples):
%windir% [usually C:\WINDOWS (Win9x/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7/8/8.1/2012) or
C:\WINNT (WinNT4/2000)], %windir%\SYSTEM [usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM] or
%windir%\SYSTEM32 [usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
(Win9x/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7/8/8.1/2012) or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 (WinNT4/2000)].
6. Add if not present or modify if present separate line under the
[InternetShortcut] section (generic, case insensitive):
IconIndex=xx
ONLY IF desired icon part of library (.CPL, .DLL, .ICL etc) or executable
(.EXE, .OCX) which usually contains more than 1 icon.
7. Replace xx = with actual integer number (from 0 up to 99) representing
ordinal icon number/position in library/executable (example):
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.mdgx.com/
IconFile=PIFMGR.DLL
IconIndex=27
To determine icon number/position:
Right-click on any link/shortcut (.LNK) file -> click Change Icon -> Browse
to location of desired icon library/executable -> highlight 1st icon (position
0) -> count upwards from 0 in increments of 1 by pressing the down arrow key
repeatedly until you reach desired icon position -> mark icon position number.
Or:
Open icon library/executable in desired Icon Editor/Viewer/Extractor tool (see
further below for examples) -> mark desired icon position number.
Then type marked icon position number on IconIndex= line above after the equal
sign.
IMPORTANT:
First icon position is always 0 for all icon libraries/executables which
contain more than 1 icon: .CPL, .DLL, .EXE, .OCX, .ICL etc.
8. Save your changes and close Notepad.

HOW I DID IT

1. I have created/edited all these .ICO files using:

* Icon Master v1.2d 16-bit 32x32 pixels 16 colors icon

creator/editor/extractor/viewer for Windows 3.1x/9x/ME, supports all popular
Windows icon formats: DLL, EXE, ICL, ICO [115 KB, nag shareware]:
http://www.mdgx.com/files/IMSTR12D.ZIP

2. I have converted/compressed all these .ICO files into MYICONS.DLL using:

* IconDLL v2.0 16-bit for MS-DOS 5/6/7/8 + Windows 3.1x/9x/ME compresses up to

600 individual .ICO files (32x32 pixels 16 colors Windows icons ONLY!) into a
single 16-bit (NOT compatible with Windows Vista/2008/7/8/8.1/2012 in default
mode!) .DLL library compatible with Windows 3.x/9x/NT/2000/XP/2003 [9 KB,
public domain]:
