Voltage Drop Calculation For XLPE

This document calculates the voltage drop for a single run of 2.5mm squared PVC/rubber cable that will carry a load of 54W at 12V AC. It selects the cable based on its current carrying capacity and then uses the cable's resistance and reactance values from charts, along with the load current and cable length, in an equation to determine the voltage drop is 2.7%.

Voltage drop calculation for XLPE/Rubber cables

Power – 54 W
Voltage – 12 V AC Single phase
Full load Current = 54/12= 4.5 A
No of runs of cable: single run
Cable laying: cable tray
Cable distance
According to the above detail correction factors:
Cable distance correction factor = 1.0
Cable grouping factor k7 = 1.0
Total derating factor = 1
Let’s Select 2.5 Sqmm, 2 core PVC/rubber cable.
Current carrying capacity of 2.5 sq.mm cable is 27 A as per the schedule
Resistance =9.45 ohm/km (obtained from the cable selection chart)
Reactance = 0130 mho/km (obtained from the cable selection chart)
Total derating current of 2.5sq.mm cable = 27 x 0.68 = 18.36 A (obtained from the chart)
Voltage Drop = (I(A) x (9.45x 0.8 + 0.130x 0.6) x D X 100)/ (V x No of run x 1000)
Voltage Drop = 18.36 x 7.635 x 4.7x 100/24 x 1 x 1000 = 2.7 %
