Laws of Indices Revision

The document discusses laws of indices and fractional indices. It provides examples of simplifying expressions using laws such as a^b x a^c = a^(b+c), a^b ÷ a^c = a^(b-c), and √a = a^1/n. It gives exercises for readers to practice applying these index laws to simplify expressions involving variables and fractional exponents.

Laws of Indices Revision

Laws of indices
The following laws of indices are true for all values of a, b, and x.
1. xa x xb = xa + b
2. x a ÷ xb = x a – b
3. xo = 1
4. x– a = 1
xa
Examples
Simplify
(a) 83 x 82 (b) 8p7 ÷ 4p2 (c) 230 (d) 5-2

(a) 83 x 82 = 82 + 3 = 85
