a. Defend the ideas in the following poems
b. Rejects this view - argumentation alienates reader
3. Preface is still necessary:
a. Poems are unique and need introduction
b. Author must explain his role
c. Should ascertain and perform duty of author
4. Main goal of poems
a. Relate events from everyday life/experience
b. Humble and rustic life
c. Use commonplace language

e. ordinary = extraordinary
5. Still has a purpose
a. Not just trivial/“mean”
b. Triviality = bad
c. Poems give importance to quotidian situations
6. Poems = emotional
a. Spontaneous overflow of feeling

10. Poetry requires pleasure


a. Beauty of poetry creates pleasure

12. Why in verse/poems, not prose?
a. Charm is inherent in poetic meter
b. Poetry imparts pleasure
c. Pleasure = intrinsic part of art and poetry
d. Purpose of poetry = excitement + overbalance of pleasure
13. Poetry = spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings
a. Emotion recollected in tranquility
b. Recollection imparts meaning/emotion to tranquil memories
14. Reader should not listen to criticisms of others
a. Judge poems for himself/herself
b. Poetry = acquired taste
