BORAX
PRINCIPLE
Boric acid reacts neutral to methyl orange, but is acid to phenolphthalein. It can be
quantitatively titrated in the presence of polyhydroxy compounds, such as mannitol
or glycerol, which prevent the hydrolysis of sodium borate. The alkali present is
neutralized first in the presence of methyl orange and the liberated boric acid is
titrated with sodium hydroxide using phenolphthalein indicator.

3. Phenolphthalein Indicator
PROCEDURE
Add phenolphthalein indicator and titrate with 0.1 N sodium hydroxide solution to
a pink end point. Add about 1 g of mannitol to the solution (Note 2). If the pink
color disappears, continue the titration until the pink color reappears. Again add

about 1 g of mannitol and titrate to a pink end point. Continue this process until
the addition of mannitol does not change the pink color of the solution (Note 3).
