Computer Aided Drawing: By: Kapil Khanal 1

The document provides an overview of an introductory lecture on computer aided drawing using AutoCAD. It discusses loading the software and understanding the screen layout, entering commands through menus and the command line, understanding the coordinate system and basic drawing commands. The key points covered include the advantages of AutoCAD, common commands like LINE, CIRCLE, and their properties, setting variables, and creating basic shapes like points, lines, circles, arcs, and polygons.

INTRODUCTION
Advantage of AutoCAD
1.AutoCAD enhances the productivity and quality of designs.

2. Drawings get prepared in relatively shorter duration.

3. Reduced the manpower requirement .

4. AutoCAD software is cost effective and highly affordable.

5. Designs can be drawn with greater accuracy.

6. Facilitates easy modification and revision of drawings.

1.1 Loading Software, Screen organization
1.2 Entering commands: menus, command line, function keys
1. Menu Browser button
Click this button to access a complete list of commands in the menu bar and to search for
Help Information.

2. Ribbon
The ribbon contains commands in a set of tabs for performing tasks.

3. Workspaces toolbar
This toolbar shows the current selection of workspaces. You can also
switch to other workspaces while working on your drawings.

4. Drawing area
The drawing area is where you create and place your drawing objects.

5 Command line
The command line shows the command that is executing, if any, and
prompts or messages from that command.
1.3 Commands and System Variables
Command Description Options

ABOUT Displays a dialogue box with AutoCAD can be transparent

version & serial numbers

CIRCLE or Draws a circle of any size. 2P /3P /D/

C TTR

ARC or Draws an arc. A Included angle

A C Center point of arc
D Direction angle of a line tangent to the arc
E Endpoint of arc
L Length of chord passing thru both
endpoints of the arc
R Radius
S Start point of arc
System Variable:
 System variables are the settings that AutoCAD checks before it decides how to do something.
Most system variables are controlled by the options command, but you can also change the value
of a system variable by simply typing its name at the AutoCAD command prompt and pressing
Enter.

• MENUBAR
When MENUBAR is 1, AutoCAD displays its traditional classic menu bar below the application title
bar. If MENUBAR is set to 0 (the default), the menu bar doesn’t appear.

• DIMASSOC
DIMASSOC controls how the AutoCAD dimension objects are created.

• MIRRTEXT
You’ll frequently build up a drawing by mirroring already-drawn components of it.
1.4 Coordinate System: entering distances and angles
1.4 Coordinate System: entering distances and angles
1.5 Starting a new drawing: naming, and saving,
ending session
2. Basic Drawing Commands (12 hours)
2.1 Creating point
2.2 Creating straight line and construction line
2.3 Creating circle, arc and ellipse
2.4 Creating polygons
2.5 Creating splines
2.1 Creating point
Command : Point Point size : Command = Pdsize
Point mode: Command = pdmode
Uses ddptype
They are used for construction
purposes, to help you find a
coordinate.
You can find a point using the
NODE object snap. Sometimes,
they are used as symbols,
especially the more visible point
styles

2.2 Creating straight line and construction line
2.2 Creating straight line and construction line
Construction line

1. Xline :
Creates a line of infinite length.
Command: Xline
2.Ray:
Creates a line that starts at a point and continues to infinity.
Command: ray
Ways of drawing X-line
• Horizontal and Vertical. Create construction lines that pass through a point
you specify and are parallel to the X or Y axis of the current UCS.

• Angle. Creates a construction line in one of two ways. Either you select a
reference line and then specify the angle of the construction line from that line,
or you create a construction line at a specific angle to the horizontal axis by
specifying an angle and then a point through which the construction line
should pass.

• Bisector. Creates a construction line that bisects an angle you specify. You
specify the vertex and the lines that create the angle.

• Offset. Creates a construction line parallel to a baseline you specify. You

specify the offset distance, select the baseline, and then indicate on which side
of the baseline to locate the construction line.
2.3 Creating circle, arc and ellipse
Different ways of drawing circle (command: c )
1. Center, Radius
2. Center, Diameter
3. 2-Point
4. 3-Points
5. Tan, Tan, Radius
6. Tan, Tan, Tan

2.3 Creating circle, arc and ellipse
Different ways of drawing arc (Command: arc).
• 3 points
• Start, center, end
• Start, center, angle
• Start, center, length
• Start, end, angle
• Start, end, direction
• Start, end, radius
• Center, start, end
• Center, start, angle
• Center, start, length
• Continue
2.3 Creating circle, arc and ellipse
The ellipse command has the following options:
- Endpoint Axis
- Center
- Arc
