Important Note
All service items are vital to the smooth running and reliability of a vehicle, none more so than the timing belt and its associated
components. For this reason we have highlighted important information from the manufacturers' service schedules covering the
intervals for checks and replacements. Be sure that you make the vehicle owner aware of this information. Industry best practice is
to ensure that the vehicle owner is made aware of the importance of replacing the timing belt and its associated components
according to the manufacturers' specification. The service history and the use of the vehicle must be considered when deciding the
correct course of action. If there is any doubt to the serviceability of the belt and its components, they should be replaced.
Timing belt replacement intervals
Where possible the recommended intervals have been compiled from vehicle manufacturers' information. In a few instances no
recommendation has been made by the manufacturer and the decision to replace the belt must be made from the evidence of a
thorough examination of the condition of the existing belt.
Apart from the visible condition of the belt, which is explained fully in the General Instructions/Toothed Timing Belts section, there are
several other factors which must be considered when checking a timing belt:
Check For Engine Damage
CAUTION: This engine has been identified as an INTERFERENCE engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage
in the event of a timing belt failure is MOST LIKELY to occur. A compression check of all cylinders should be performed
before removing the cylinder head.

Removal
WARNING: Engines with variable valve timing: Mark camshaft sprockets and camshaft adjusters with chalk or paint prior to
timing belt removal to assist alignment on installation.
3. Turn auxiliary drive belt tensioner pulley to release tension on belt. Use ring spanner.
4. Lock auxiliary drive belt tensioner pulley [2] . Use tool No.EN-6349.
5. Remove:
Auxiliary drive belt.
Auxiliary drive belt tensioner pulley.
NOTE: Mark direction of rotation on belt with chalk if belt is to be reused.
6. Turn crankshaft clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder. Ensure timing marks aligned [3] .
7. Remove RH plate from camshaft sprockets locking tool [4] .
8. Fit camshaft sprockets locking tool [5] . Tool No.EN-6340.
9. Ensure timing mark aligned with groove on camshaft sprockets locking tool [6] & [7] .
10. Ensure timing mark on inlet camshaft adjuster is positioned above groove on camshaft sprockets locking tool [6] & [8] .
11. Remove bolt from cylinder block. Install flywheel locking tool [9] . Tool No.EN-6625.
12. Remove:
Crankshaft pulley bolt [10] .
13. Turn tensioner pulley clockwise until locking pin can be inserted [13] . Tool No.EN-6333. Use Allen key [14] .
NOTE: DO NOT slacken tensioner pulley bolt [15] .
14. Remove timing belt.
NOTE: Mark direction of rotation on belt with chalk if belt is to be reused.
Installation
8. Turn crankshaft slowly two turns in direction of rotation to TDC on No.1 cylinder.
9. Ensure timing marks aligned [16] .
10. Fit camshaft sprockets locking tool [5] .
11. Ensure timing mark aligned with groove on camshaft sprockets locking tool [6] & [7] .
12. Ensure timing mark on inlet camshaft adjuster is positioned above groove on camshaft sprockets locking tool [8] & [6] .
13. Remove camshaft sprockets locking tool [5] .
14. Fit:
Timing belt lower cover [12] .
Crankshaft pulley [11] .
Flywheel locking tool [9] .
New crankshaft pulley bolt [10] . Tightening torque: 95 Nm + 45° + 15°.
