Synopsis Performance of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Material in Stone Matrix Asphalt Mix

The document summarizes a study on the performance of reclaimed asphalt pavement material in stone matrix asphalt mixes. The study aims to evaluate the effect of adding different proportions of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) at 10%, 30%, and 50% on the properties of stone matrix asphalt mixes. The mixes will be designed using the Marshall method and tested for properties, fatigue, moisture susceptibility, and temperature performance. The expected outcomes are to determine the effect of RAP on the strength of stone matrix asphalt mixes and the maximum percentage of RAP that can be used without compromising mix strength.

SYNOPSIS

PERFORMANCE OF RECLAIMED ASPHALT PAVEMENT MATERIAL IN

STONE MATRIX ASPHALT MIX

Introduction: Reclaimed Asphalt material is a removed pavement material consists of

aggregates and asphalt. It has been grown widely reducing the fresh materials and helping in
preserving land space. Recycled pavement materials are formed when asphalt pavement
materials are removed from construction or resurfacing. Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) is a gap
graded asphalt mixture performing better than conventional dense graded mixtures. It
contains high concentration of coarse aggregates, forming stone to stone contact between
them, and high asphalt content. The coarse aggregate skeleton results better load distribution
and the high asphalt content adds durability to the mixture. Improved wet weather
performance, and reduced noise under traffic operations. The use of reclaimed asphalt
pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixtures provides the means to recycle the existing roadway and
use that material in a limited amount, in the construction of new pavements. This is an
environmentally friendly method to recycle the existing pavement and provide a new
pavement surface. Based on the success obtained with the incorporation of RAP in
conventional mixtures, the use of RAP in SMA mixtures needed to be evaluated. The present
study is to evaluate the effect of RAP on combined aggregate properties, asphalt binder,
properties, and to evaluate the strength of SMA mix with different proportions of RAP and
fibres.

Methodology: The study describes the effect of reclaimed asphalt pavement materials on
stone matrix asphalt. The process is carried out by adding different proportion of reclaimed
asphalt pavement materials i.e. viz 10%, 30%, 50% to conventional stone matrix asphalt
mixes with fibre. The marshal method of mix design is carried out and properties of mix are
determined. Steel fibre is used to prevent drain down of stone matrix asphalt mix.
Subsequently fatigue test, temperature and moisture susceptibility of stone matrix asphalt mix
incorporating reclaimed asphalt materials are to be determined.

Expected outcomes: The expected outcomes of this study are effects of reclaimed asphalt
pavement material on strength property of stone matrix asphalt. The percentage of reclaimed
asphalt pavement material to be considered for design without affecting the strength of stone
matrix asphalt mix.
