Explain Different types of Servers

DNS

A DNS server is any computer registered to join the Domain Name System. A DNS server
runs special-purpose networking software, features a public IP address, and contains a
database of network names and addresses for other Internet hosts.

Print Server
A print server is a software application, network device or computer that manages print
requests and makes printer queue status information available to end users and network
administrators. Print servers are used in both large enterprise and small or home office
(SOHO ) networks.

File Server
In the client/server model, a file server is a computer responsible for the central storage and
management of data files so that other computers on the same network can access the files. A
file server allows users to share information over a network without having to physically
transfer files by floppy diskette or some other external storage device. Any computer can be
configured to be a host and act as a file server. In its simplest form, a file server may be an
ordinary PC that handles requests for files and sends them over the network. In a more
sophisticated network, a file server might be a dedicated network-attached storage (NAS)
device that also serves as a remote hard disk drive for other computers, allowing anyone on
the network to store files on it as if to their own hard drive.
A program or mechanism that enables the required processes for file sharing can also be
called a file server. On the Internet, such programs often use the File Transfer Protocol
(FTP).

Proxy Server
A proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make
indirect network connections to other network services. A client connects to the proxy server,
then requests a connection, file, or other resource available on a different server.

Web Server
Web servers are computers that deliver (serves up) Web pages. Every Web server has an IP
address and possibly a domain name. The server then fetches the page named index.html and
sends it to your browser.

Any computer can be turned into a Web server by installing server software and connecting
the machine to the Internet. There are many Web server software applications, including
public domain software and commercial packages.

Mail Server
A mail server is the computerized equivalent of your friendly neighborhood mailman.
Every email that is sent passes through a series of mail servers along its way to its
intended recipient. Although it may seem like a message is sent instantly - zipping from
one PC to another in the blink of an eye - the reality is that a complex series of transfers
takes place. Without this series of mail servers, you would only be able to send emails to
people whose email address domains matched your own.

Provide the different types of servers that you would have to utilize in this solution and
comprehensively analyze and compare the different types of servers available in the
market (based on the cost and benefits of them) and make the best selection. Justify
your answer.

We have chosen HP G8 ML350p (668267-005) as the server computer for LRC Lanka (PVT) ltd. This
server pc supports Microsoft Windows platforms (Operating system) and supports Linux also. Compare
to other severs this cost is reasonable.

It has more RAM memory, memory slots, and Maximum cache than other servers and it support 1000-
base specific standard. In future if we need to extend our network we can increase the main memory.
That’s why I prefer this for our given scenario.
