What the papers say 15

Facts 16
Dear teachers,

Espionage has long been a part of human history:

many even take it to be the second oldest profession
in history. Napoleon is said to have believed that
a single spy was worth 20,000 soldiers. Indeed,
knowledge about the plans of the enemy could
even have prevented a nuclear war at several points
during the Cold War.

Edward Snowden revealed the methods which our

intelligence agencies use to combat terrorism.
Although the world was outraged at his revelations,
many are not aware of the extent to which we
reveal our data through the use of health insurance
cards, networked cars, smartphones, credit cards,
Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat. Advertisers and
electoral strategists profit from what they learn
about our lives.

Berlin was and indeed continues to be the Capital

of Spies. Use your school trip or project day to teach
your class about the history, present and future of
spies and data protection. Not just of academic inter-
est, this involves important life lessons.

We look forward to your visit.

4 THE EXHIBITION

The world
of spies
From the first cipher
to Edward Snowden
Set over 3000 m², our permanent exhibition takes
your school class on a journey back in time and
through the history of espionage. Beginning with
the first ciphers in the ancient world, the exhibition
introduces its visitors to military intelligence in the
two world wars and provides an in-depth account of
the Cold War, before moving to the contemporary
debate over the NSA and Big Data.

Viewing unique artefacts from the world of spying,

the visitor is introduced to the methods of the East
German Stasi and hears testimony from top agents
from the Cold War. Espionage experts provide a
commentary on the artefacts. Unique multi-media
installations explain the importance of data protec-
tion and how to use Social Networks safely.

Even the least sporting of your pupils will enjoy the

laser obstacle course!
