Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, known as the Books of Law or the Pentateuch. These books recount the history of God's chosen people from Creation to just before they enter the Promised Land. They establish God's law for the Israelites. The books cover major stories and covenants including Adam and Eve, Noah and the Flood, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Joseph and his brothers, Moses freeing the Israelites from Egypt, and God's laws given at Mount Sinai. The books lay the foundation for Israel's relationship with God and their identity as His chosen nation.

Moses was chosen by God to write the Books of the Law: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,

Numbers, & Deuteronomy.

The Bible contains a history of redemption through a special seed, mentioned first in Genesis
3:15. In Genesis, the seed was promised and the line was chosen (Abraham; see Genesis
22:18).

Genesis includes the stories of:

 The Creation Story (Gen. 1:2-31 & 2:1-3)
o Day 1-light
o Day 2-firmament (Heaven)
o Day 3-earth & water
o Day 4-sun, moon, stars
o Day 5-birds & fish
o Day 6-land animals & mankind
o Day 7-God rested
 Adam & Eve and their children-Cain, Abel, & Seth (Gen 2:15-25, 3-5, 2:17)
o Serpent and the Tree of Knowledge of Good & Evil--Adam & Eve sinned by
disobeying God. Describe their sinfulness & punishments. Explain what that led
to.
o Cain, a farmer, killed his brother, Abel, a herdsman (shepherd). Cain’s
punishment was that he has to wander around like a fugitive for the rest of his life
o Seth’s descendants--Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah
 The destruction of the world by a flood (Genesis 6, 7) & the Covenant
o Noah & the ark
o Covenant--God promised to never destroy the earth again by flood; rainbow
 Abraham & Lot (his nephew) (Genesis 11:27-32, 12, 13, 15-17, 21-24)
o God promised Abraham that he would become the Father of a Nation
 Abraham’s journeys & famine
 Lesson from Lot about selfish choices/not considering results of actions
 Abraham (Abram), Sarah (Sarai), and Isaac, Jacob & Joseph
o Isaac, Son of Abraham (Abraham was 100; Sarah was 90 → Isaac born)
 God tested Abraham by calling upon him to offer his son as a burnt
offering; instead God provided a ram. (God sometimes tests us but the
results are always for our good when we are faithful to His Word.)
o Rebekah & Isaac → twin sons, Esau & Jacob (Genesis 25:20-34, Genesis 37,
39-40)
 Know the story of the twins & the birthright
 Jacob’s dream
 5 Promises from God to Jacob
 Jacob (name later changed to Israel) & Rachel → 12 sons (the 12 tribes
of Israel...Through Israel would come the blessing of salvation to all the
families of the earth.)
o Joseph
 11th son of Jacob but first-born of Rachel
 His dreams
 Coat of many colors
 What his brothers did
 While in prison, he interpreted dreams for two men who had worked for
Pharaoh.
 Became next to Pharaoh in authority in all of Egypt
 Famine

In Exodus, the chosen seed became a nation of people in slavery. God brought them out of
bondage so that He might give to them a victorious, holy life in the land He had promised.

In Exodus, you will study:

 The story of Moses as a baby
o Moses was born at a time when Pharaoh said that all male babies of the children
of Israel must be killed. His mother hid him for 3 months. Then she put him in a
little ark/raft in the river. Moses’ sister, Miriam, hid to watch. Pharaoh’s daughter
found Moses, Miriam ran to ask if they needed a nurse for the baby then went to
get her mother to do so. (So, Moses’ real mother did get to care for him.)
 Moses in Midian (Hebrews 11:24-27 tells of Moses’ decision to follow God’s plan for his
life; Acts 7:23-27 tells of his failure in trying to do it on his own before he was fully
prepared.) He fled Egypt for Midian where he married Zipporah & had 2 sons. Moses
was in the wilderness for 40 years. This is where God spoke to Moses from a burning
bush. He told Moses to go back to Egypt & deliver the people from oppression. Moses
tried to give God 3 excuses that he couldn’t do it.
 Ten Plagues
 God gave Moses the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai
 How Jacob’s family, the people of Israel, became slaves in Egypt
 How God used Moses to lead them out of Egypt & back to Canaan
 The building of the Tabernacle (Exodus 40:34)

In Leviticus, you will study how God taught His people at Sinai that redeemed sinners can
worship and serve a Holy God. (Leviticus 1 & 16)
 Chapters 1-7 deal with offerings: burnt (there were specific instructions for this), meal
(meat), peace, sin, and trespass. These offerings taught lessons of consecration,
service, fellowship, victory, & salvation.
 Contains teachings (law and rules) to guide the priests, the people, and the nation. It
gives both physical and spiritual laws.
 One of the most important chapters in the Bible is Leviticus 16, about God’s law for the
Great Day of Atonement. (Restoring fellowship with God)

Numbers gives the history of Israel’s journey from Sinai to Moab, on the border of Canaan
(Numbers 1, 13, & 26)

 Numbers tells the history of Israel from Mount Sinai to Moab

 Probably called “Numbers” because of the Census
 Israel failed to believe & act upon God’s promise and the people were sentenced to
wandering around the wilderness for 40 years.

Deuteronomy tells of God’s final preparation for Israel to enter the Promised Land.
 This is a record of Moses repeating and adding to God’s Law.
 Moses time as Israel’s leader comes to an end.
 Joshua becomes the leader of Israel.
