Patients arriving in Paediatric Emergency Departments due to alcohol abuse is fairly common.
The aim of this study is to determine the profile of the patients seen in the emergency room
for acute ethanol intoxication. Material and method: A descriptive study was performed on
all patients seen in the emergency department with an acute ethanol intoxication over a 12-
month period (2007). Patients with accidental poisoning or with related chronic illness were
excluded.
This study demonstrates the importance of abusive alcohol consumption among adolescents
in today's society, especially considering that the IEA not only represents a risk to health, but
could be an indicator of social problems or even behavioral in the future. It is confirmed that
the IEA is a relatively frequent reason for consultation of this population group in the
SEU1,2,5-8 (3.6% of the visits is older than 14 years) and represents an average of One visit
every 3 days. In addition, it is worth noting the existence of cases in early adolescence
(between 12 and 14 years), a fact that supports the trend detected in recent years that this
problem occurs in people more and more young boys.
As reported by other studies, there are no statistically significant differences in the number of
consultations according to the sex of the subjects, and the predilection for the weekend,
holidays and night time is evident.
It is proven that alcohol produces serious physical, psychological and social effects.
Remember, also, that it is illegal to consume it before the age of 18. However, everyone
knows that if a young person wants to drink alcohol, he can do it no matter how much his
consumption is prohibited. In fact, young people meet in the street and get alcoholic drinks
without difficulty. Moreover, half of Spanish adolescents do not believe that taking 4 or 5
drinks during weekends can cause health problems. Although I am aware of the difficulty of
dealing with this problem, I am afraid that the administrative and health authorities do not
put much effort into doing so. In my opinion it would be necessary, in the first place, to offer
young people information about the effects of alcohol intake (I know that some talks are
given, but I do not know a systematic work in this sense); and, secondly, sanction
inappropriate behaviors appropriately.
Health professionals have been denouncing, for a long time, the effects that alcohol can have
on the health of adolescents, both now and in the future, as their consumption harms their
brain development and can cause memory and learning problems.
The consumption of alcohol is associated with conflict in personal and family relationships
and school failure. Furthermore, under the influence of alcohol, risky behaviors can be
maintained with serious consequences, such as traffic accidents, sexually transmitted infections
or unwanted pregnancies
