Educational system in the USA and UK

USA and UK share a rich tradition of quality higher education and a culture that promotes
intellectualism as well as academic freedom. More than half of the world’s top 200 universities
are located in either the USA or the UK.

However, there are clearly many differences in the educational systems of the USA and UK,
the most notable of which is the age when children begin and finish their education. On the other
hand, educational system of the USA differ from educational system of the UK by the objects that
they have to study.

In the USA, children begin kindergarten at age of 5 to 6 and attend for one year. The daily
schedule in kindergarten includes looking at the calendar, discussing the weather and seasons, and
also children work on different subjects. In math, kindergartners do single addition and subtraction,
learn to count with more or less and become acquainted with a clock. In language arts, they learn
sight words. Then, they learn how to write and form sentences. And not at least, they can go outside
to play on swings, slides, play basketball or socialize.
On the other hand, in the UK kindergarten becomes compulsory between the ages of 4 and
5 years, depending on children’s birthday. In comparison with USA, in the UK, the word
“kindergarten” is used for nursery schools, crèche or playgroups. It differs from USA because
there are nurseries that provide full-day child care for working parents.

Elementary education in the USA starts at the age of 5 or 6 and belongs to 11, depending on
the particular state and whether a kindergarten year is provided. Elementary schools provide
instruction in the fundamental skills of reading, writing and Maths, as well as History and
Geography, Music, Science, Art and Physical Education or Gym. Foreign languages, which used
to be taught at high schools only, are now being introduced during the last few years of elementary
school in some areas. Elementary students are usually given regular homework, although in many
schools few children complete it.
Elementary schools in the UK are dissimilar to those in the USA. They admit children from
the ages of 5 through to 11. There, they achieve the base for next studies, similarly to USA.
Students learn History, Geography, Mathematics, Science, Design and Technology, Information
Technology, Religious Education, Physical Education, Art, Music. A foreign language is required
for older students.
Secondary school students in the USA must take certain curriculum courses for a prescribed
number of years or terms. These generally include English, Maths, General Science, Health,
Physical Education and Social Studies or Social Sciences. In addition, students choose optional
objects, which supplement their future education and career plans.
In contrast, secondary school in the UK belongs from 11 to 18 years. There, students take
core objects as English, Maths and Science. Then, they select an additional 4 or 5 subjects, as
French, German, Business Studies, Design and Technology, Music, Sports Science, Geography or
History.

As in many states, in the USA, minimum age for enrolment at university is usually 18.
Higher education offers a blend of natural and social sciences and humanistic studies. There are
three main levels of higher education: undergraduate studies (bachelor’s degree), graduate studies
(master’s degree) and postgraduate studies (doctor’s degree).
Higher education in UK is optional, the same as in the USA. There, it is dominated by public
universities, which are characterized by their autonomy. There is a great variation among public
universities, but private institutions also exist in the UK.

In conclusion, educational systems are very developed both USA and UK. There are loads
of opportunities for students. What is more, students are able to choose some objects that they
want to study.
