Interpreting Graha Bala in Jyotish Shastra

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/vedic-astrology/conversations/messages/15900

 A planet must be in a good "avastha" (state) to give good results.

 Vimsopaka bala shows the overall strength of a planet and its ability to play an important role in
one's life (rather than a specific area of life). Above 10 makes for a good dasa and below 10 will
lead to a dasa ‘lacking’ in many facets of life (even if the planet is otherwise strongly placed in
terms of shadbala etc.). Score is on 20, depending on placement in divisional charts

 When two or more planets influence the same house or when they participate in yoga, then the
planet with the highest shadbala is the most likely give the results. The planet with the
strongest shadbala is like a group leader who acts on the group's behalf.

 Even if a planet has good shadbala, it will be unable to deliver its goods if it is at odds with
other planets in the chart, i.e. has low ashtakavarga strength.

 Ashtakavarga bala shows how other planets support or oppose a planet. It does not show how
capable the planet is of leading and giving the results of a group of planets, unlike shadbala. It
shows how capable a planet is of giving its own results, in harmony with other planetary forces.

 A planet may have good ashtakavarga strength in one divisional chart and poor ashtakavarga
strength in another divisional chart. Then it will give its results more effectively in the area of life
related to the first chart.

 Sthana Bala (Position Strength): Sthana literally means “stance” or “standing”. When we look at
a person, how they stand automatically tells us a lot about their character. Their stance is how
they face the world. In martial arts, the first thing they teach you is a stance. This is how you face
your opponent. The planet which has the highest points in Sthana Bala is very apparent in a
person’s character. This strength is ruled by Mercury. Mercury is the planet a person uses to
manage their life and in the classical texts, Mercury is called “the consciousness spoken”. Thus,
the planet that has the highest points in Sthana Bala will be communicated by the native and the
person will have trouble communicating through the planet that is weakest in Sthana Bala.

 The planet with the highest dig bala points will be the planet that most guides the person
towards what they want in life. If a planet does not meet the minimum requirements for this
strength, then that planet cannot guide the person towards fulfillment and there will be regrets
in the end.

 Ayana Bala specifically measures how a person deals with conflict and adversity. The planet with
the lowest ayana bala score is the planet the person gets most conflicted about. This is the
planet that is very difficult to use when called upon to solve conflict.

 Planets that are strong in Kala Bala, exert the strongest force in the horoscope while running
their periods (dasas and antardasas). The native will feel the effects of these planets more than
others and remember them throughout life.
 Cheshta Bala shows what drives us, our inherent desires and purpose of our
struggle in this life. It is motivation based on a short term focus on our immediate wants.
http://www.learnjyotish.com/phpBB3_0/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6708. Planets
which are relatively slow (among them retrograde planets) get a high Chesta Bala value. Planets
which are relatively fast get a low chesta bala value. The reasoning is that slow moving planets
are able to focus their energy more because they stay in one place. The maximum amount of
Shashtiamsas to be earned is 60. I would like to stress that it is the relative speed I am talking
about here: relative to the average speed of a planet. http://www.dirah.org/shadbala.htm

 What does Cheshta Bala measure? It measures the confidence of the planet. High cheshta bala =
high confidence. How does confidence make a planet effective? It creates magnetism that draws
in the whatever is desired. A person who has confidence but no skill almost magically can
manifest what he desires. Confidence really helps us make effective use of the planet. A person
can have a lot of skill but no confidence and wont be able to manifest the full extent of that
planet.

 if a certain planet has a negative Drig Bala value than it is mainly under the influence of malefics
and if it has a positive Drig Bala value it is under the influence of benefics. Therefore I think the
Drig Bala value is very interesting. By looking at the Shadbala printout we can immediately see if
a planet is mainly under the influence of benefics or malefics and how strong this influence is.

 When in the dasa of a positive Drig Bala planet, life will feel less stressful and happier.

 Drig Bala specifically shows the obstacles and adversities a person will meet with when trying to
use specific planetary energies.

 if dominance of a planet and/or a sign is more than Ascendant or Moon or Sun signs, the person
will more likely act as that sign (the dominant one) only. That's why sometimes it may happen
that you dont act as your sun/moon/ascendant (http://scorpiomoon.tribe.net/thread/a2a5461d-
