Kolkata and North-East Centre at Tezpur: Indian Statistical Institute
The Indian Statistical Institute (Economic Research Unit, Kolkata, and North-East
Centre at Tezpur) is organizing a 10-day Research Methodology course at the Indian
Statistical Institute, North-East Centre, Tezpur University Campus, Tezpur, Assam-784028
during January 15-25, 2018, with partial financial support from the Indian Council of Social
Science Research. The objective of the School is to familiarise the participants with the
theory and methods of advanced statistical techniques which are applied in Social Science
with emphasis on hands-on exercises. The topics to be covered in the School are the
following.
Basic regression analysis with diagnostics; Testing of hypothesis and ANOVA, Probit
and Logit models; Non-parametric regression; Quantile regression; Endogeneity; Sample
survey and research design; Frontier production function and stochastic frontier production
function; Panel data models; ARIMA modelling and forecasting, Unit root tests,
Cointegration analysis; Volatility models like GARCH and EGARCH; Risk Management;
Tests for multiple structural breaks; Propensity score matching; Inequality and Poverty;
ICSSR Data Service; software packages R and SPSS.
The School is meant for research fellows working in different fields of Social Science.
Preference would be given to candidates from the North-Eastern States. Applicants must have
consistently good academic records with at least a Master’s degree in any subject of Social
Science from a recognized university/institution. They must have had a sound training in
Statistics/Quantitative Techniques in Social Science, and also be familiar with the basics of
Time Series Analysis.
There is a registration fees of Rs. 1000/- per participant. Participants will be provided
with free board and lodging. Participants are requested to bring their laptops, if they have,
with them.
