Tutorial Adsorption

This document contains 3 problems related to adsorption processes. The first problem involves calculating the final equilibrium values and percent phenol extracted from a wastewater solution mixed with granular activated carbon. The second problem involves determining break-point time, fraction of total capacity used, unused bed length, and saturation loading capacity for a molecular sieve process removing water from nitrogen gas. The third problem uses breakthrough data from a lab-scale unit to determine break-point time and saturation loading capacity for a 0.4m high adsorption tower removing water from nitrogen gas.

Tutorial Adsorption

CDB 2063 Separation Process 2

May 2018
1. A wastewater solution having a volume of 2.5 m3 contains 0.25 kg phenol/m3 of
solution. This solution is mixed thoroughly in a batch process with 3.0 kg of
granular activated carbon until equilibrium is reached. By using the isotherm of q =
0.199c0.229, calculate the final equilibrium values and the percent phenol extracted.
2. Using molecular sieves, water vapor was removed from nitrogen gas in a packed
bed at 28.3°C. the column height was 0.268 m, with the bulk density of the solid
bed being equal to 712.8 kg/m3. The initial water concentration in the solid was
0.01 kg water/kg solid and the mas velocity of the nitrogen was 4052 kg/m2.h. The
initial water concentration in the gas was C0= 926×10-6 kg water/kg nitrogen. The
breakthrough data are as follows:

t (h) 0 9 9.2 9.6 10 10.4 10.8 11.25 11.5 12 12.5 12.8

A value of c/c0 = 0.02 is desired at the break point. Do as follows:

a) Determine the break-point time (tb), the fraction of total capacity used up to
the break point (tu/tt), the length of the unused bed, and the saturation loading
capacity of the solid.
b) For a proposed column length HT = 0.40 m, calculate the break-point time and
fraction of total capacity used (tu/tt).

3. A lab-scale adsorption unit was set up to remove water from a nitrogen gas tream using
molecular sieves zeolite with the bulk density of 720 kg/m3. The zeolite was packed as a
bed in a 0.3 m-high column and the operation temperature was 8.3°C. The initial water
concentration in the adsorbent was 0.01 kg water/kg solid. The mass velocity of the
nitrogen gas stream was 1000 kg/h. The stream contained an initial water concentration,
c0, of 926 x 10-6 kg water/kg nitrogen. The desired break point is at c/c0 of 0.02. Figure
shows the breakthrough data obtained using the experimental set up. Using the
laboratory data as plotted in FIGURE 1 for scale-up, determine the new break point time
for a new adsorption tower with the height of 0.4 m.
Determine the saturation loading capacity of the solid for the new bed height i.e. 0.4 m.
Assume the cross-sectional area of the column is 1 m2.
