There is an electrical fault on an APU starter.

Describe the
procedures and equipment used to return the aircraft to
service.
Ans: Procedures for rectification of a defect should go through several steps
such as fault detection, isolation, rectification, operational test and finally
paper work to release the aircraft for flight.

To isolate and rectify the cause of the fault, proceed as follows:

- Carry out BITE test which may be done on ECB, MAT,MCDU depending
upon the type of aircraft. A fault code may be obtained from BITE test.
(In some aircraft, in-situ ECB BITE test may show faulty component
which can be replaced for fault rectification).
- Go to the trouble shooting manuals(TSM) and use BITE fault code to
find out appropriate trouble shooting tree. Follow the fault isolation steps
which may include:

a) Visual inspection: To look for wire damages, burnings or chafing of

electrical cables, dirty/broken/missing pins,
b)
c) Electrical checks: To check wiring between starter and the ECB and
may include (i) resistance & continuity check from contact-to-contact,
(ii) short between contacts (iii) contacts to grounds.
d)
At this time, connectors are also to be checked for contamination,
missing/broken pins and to clean/repair accordingly. To carry out visual
and electrical checks, TSM will give AMM references.

- Go to appropriate AMM chapters to find procedures to carryout above

TSM tasks. Accordingly, prepare the aircraft, take calibrated and correct
range tools like resistance & continuity tester or AVO meter with correct
specification, pull out and tag appropriate CB’s and perform the required
checks & tests observing all the safety precautions as per AMM
chapters. Clean, repair or replace faulty cables or damaged pins
accordingly.

- Do a functional test and confirm fault has been rectified.

- Inspect the area for any tool and equipments missed. If clear, close
access doors and return aircraft to normal configuration.

- Close defect in defect card, tech log and sign for returning aircraft to
service.

-
MCDU : multi-function control diplay unit MAT : maintenance access terminal
ECB : electronic control box AVO : ampere and volt meter
