Layered Paging in Idle Mode

Layered paging in idle mode divides paging into two layers. In the first layer, when a UE is in idle mode, its location is saved in the RNC table and incoming paging is directed to its last camped cell and neighboring cells while the information is valid. If the timer expires, paging moves to the second layer where it is directed to all users in cells in the same location area. Layered paging reduces paging load by limiting the number of cells paged in the first layer and making load proportional to configuration parameters. Traffic balancing between networks can be achieved using parameters for intra-layer and inter-layer handover thresholds.

Layered paging in idle mode which divide paging into two layers as follow:

first layer:
UE inform RNC by its last camped cell & its location saved in RNC Table where the
information is valid during paging timer thus any incoming paging in idle mode will be
directed towards

the last camped UE's cell & its neighbors UE's cells else if timer expired then UE is subject to
not accessing network anymore & hence paging in idle mode will go to the second
layer(normal paging)

second layer:
it is the normal paging condition where incoming paging is directed to all the users in cells
located in the same LAC.

Benefits : Layered Paging in Idle Mode reduces the Uu-interface paging load of UEs in idle
mode. The reduced paging load is:

-Inversely proportional to the average number of a cell's configured neighboring cells


-Proportional to the number of configured cells in an LA or RA
-Proportional to the first-layer paging success rate

For traffic balancing using HODCS - DCS / GSM - GSM : means same layer, you can using PBGT
HO parameterDCS - GSM / GSM - DCS : means different layer, you can using interlayer HO
related parameter (i attach MML command doc for your reference)or you may set CRO for DCS
bigger than GSM to attract more traffic to DCS and reduce ping-pong HO,or you can enable
LOADHOEN parameter to 'yes' for traffic load-sharing handover. all parameter related you can
find on the attachment. _____________ The same layer of Cell, you can optimize with PBGT HO
Threshold, CRO or load handover support parameters but difference layer cell G9 and G18 you
