Scope and Content

The Calvin Edwards collection contains published and unpublished records

dating primarily from the mid to late 1970s to the early 1980s. The topics include many
controversies, primarily theological, extent in the Seventh-day Adventist Church during
that period. Among the issues are the following:
Robert Brinsmead
Sanctuary
Ellen G. White
Davenport scandal
Nature of Christ
"New theology" controversy
Righteousness by faith
Pre-advent judgment
Geoffrey Paxton.
The records do not treat any one topic in depth, but provides an overview of the issues
and what was being said at certain times.

Content

The collection contains unpublished manuscripts, letters (usually widely

circulated letters), sermons, transcripts of talks, responses to public statements and
writings made by others, leaflets, and a couple books.

Arrangement

The records are arranged alphabetically by author and then by title. There are a
number of records where the author is unknown. These are arranged alphabetically by
title under “anonymous” at the end of the collection. It should be noted that the very
last items are four folders of oversize "Sermon Reports" by Robert Brinsmead. They
are listed out of order due to their size.

Provenance

This collection was purchased by the James White Library in the Spring of 1992
from Calvin Edwards. Edwards was a student in Australia when the theological
controversy, sketched in this collection, began in the 1970s. He moved to Andrews
University in about 1978 or 1979 to earn a graduate degree from the Theological

Seminary. In the early 1980s Edwards was associated with Desmond Ford and his
organization, Good News Unlimited. Through his interest and participation in these
discussions he collected the documents which constitute this collection.

Use

All users of this collection will be required to complete the "Application to Use
Unpublished Records," and to observe the regulations specified in the "Patron's
Agreement" and "Researcher's Code of Conduct." All records in this collection are
open and available for research. Citation for this collection:
