By Myrna Pena-Reyes: Breaking Through

The summary is: The speaker carefully unwraps a package that was tied tightly with twine by her father, reflecting on his thoroughness. In the second poem, an actor unexpectedly kicks his country's governor during a performance, to the delight of the audience, as the governor had oppressed the people but appreciated theater. The governor joins in the applause, feeling the theater had progressed.

“Breaking Through” Third World Opera

by Myrna Pena-Reyes By Simeon Dumdum Jr.

Haltingly I undo the knots When he kicked the governor,

around your parcel that came this morning. The applause
A small box should require little labor, Was deafening.
but you’ve always been thorough, Everybody stood up
tying things tight and well. And cheered.
The twine lengthens, Even a baby cooed,
curls beside the box. So he thought.
I see your fingers bind and pull, Such an adulation
snapping the knots into place He never had in his career,
(once your belt slapped sharply against my skin) And it was for an act
You hoped the package would hold its shape His role
Across 10,000 miles of ocean. Had not demanded.
Why, he was about to burst into song
It’s not a bride’s superstition After kissing the leading lady
that leaves the scissors in the drawer. When he saw
Unravelling what you’ve done with love The governor, smiling
I practice more than patience In the front row,
a kind of thoroughness And he remembered the dictator,
The governor's master,
I couldn’t see before.
And his sins
I shall not let it pass.
Against the people.
My father, this undoing is
what binds us.

For his part, the governor
Deserved credit.
That he loved Vivaldi
Whom he thought painted The Last Supper
Was well known.
Better known
Was his passion for the theatre,

And the tragic thing that could happen

Was for one
To think his honor a fool
In matters of the stage,
And so when the actor descended,
In surprising haste,
And planted
A rather realistic kick
In his groin,
He felt honored,
Marveling with gratitude
At how much theatre had progressed,
And joined the crowd
In the applause.
