NATIONAL AUTOMOTIVE TESTING AND R&D
INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT (NATRIP)
In May 2018, Union Cabinet Minister of Heavy Industries inaugurated various facilities
under NATRIP at the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), Manesar
(Haryana).
About:

 Objective: Under this project, Government of India, a number of State Governments and Indian
Automotive Industry have joined hands to create a state of the art Testing, Validation and R&D
infrastructure in the Automotive sector of the country.
 Test Centers setup under it: GARC Chennai, ICAT Manesar, NATRAX Indore, NCVRS Raebareli,
NIAIMT Silchar, VRDE Ahmednagar and ARAI Pune.
 Significance: The NATRIP project is required –
o To ensure sustainable manufacturing practises in motor vehicles (in line with UN Regulation
on Harmonisation of Vehicle Specifications under WP-29 of 1998).
o To support Automotive Mission Plan 2016-26 i.e. scaling up exports to the extent of 35-40%
of its overall output over the next 10 years.
o To make Indian vehicles comply with global standard of safety (in line with UN Brasilia
resolution) to reduce road accidents.

PRAAPTI
In May 2018, Union Minister of Power launched PRAAPTI App and Web Portal.
About:

 PRAAPTI is an acronym for: Payment Ratification And Analysis in Power procurement for bringing
Transparency in Invoicing of generators.
 Objective: To bring transparency in power purchase transactions between Generators and Discoms.

COMMUNAL POLITICS
In May 2018, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court to order the government to restrict
the misuse of religion for electoral gain.
About:

 The petitioner argued that religious statements have been made to support particular political
parties and candidates, which is against democracy.
 Earlier attempts:
o The 1990 report of the Goswami Committee on Electoral Reforms recommended giving
Election Commission the power to initiate probe, to prosecute or even appoint a Special
Court for offences related to misuse of religion in the election.

o An Amendment Bill was introduced in 1990 in the Rajya Sabha to restrict the use of religion
in the election, however, the bill was withdrawn three years later.

REDUCING SCHOOL BURDEN


In May 2018, the Madras High Court directed center and state governments to reduce
education burden in school.

“Neither children are weightlifters nor school bags load containers” – Madras High Court

Directions passed:

 Homework banned for students of Class I & II: No school in the country, irrespective of the
educational board, prescribe homework for children in Classes I & II.
 Subjects to be taught: No school should force upon children any subject other than language and
mathematics in Classes I and II. Further, the only additional subject for Classes III-V should be
environmental science.
 Textbooks: Even private schools affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) should
follow only NCERT textbooks and not those of private publishers. It is because private schools dump
too many books on children.
 Formulate school bag policy: Centre should formulate a policy on the lines of the Children School
Bags (Limitation on Weight) Bill, 2006.
 Constitute flying squads: State government/UTs should constitute flying squads to conduct
inspections in schools to monitor compliance with the directions. Schools violating these directions
should be disaffiliated.

BRAHMAPUTRA STUDY CENTRE


In May 2018, Union Government announced the setting up of a ‘Brahmaputra Study
Centre’.
About:

 Location: The center will be setup at Gauhati University, Guwahati (Assam), for which a fund of
about Rs. 28 crore will be provided by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region
(DONER).
 Objective: The center will research in different aspects of river Brahmaputra in physics, hydrology,
waterways, environment, disaster/flood management, hydro-power production etc.

RADA
In May 2018, Vistara airline announced the creation of a robot called RADA, using Artificial
Intelligence technology.

About:

 RADA is derived from ‘Radha,’ the name of the daughter of a Principal


Architect in Vistara’s IT team who played an active role in its
development.
 The robot will be placed at its signature lounge at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi
International Airport from July 5, 2018. It will answer passenger
queries once they have scanned your boarding pass, will greet and
interact with them using basic hand movements.

Vistara?
 Tata SIA Airlines Limited, operating as Vistara, is an Indian domestic airline based in Gurgaon.
 The carrier is a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines. It commenced operations
in 2015.
ENDOPHYTES
In May 2018, Scientists sent Broccoli seeds coated with a healthy dose of good bacteria to
space.
About:

 These “beneficial” microbes, also called endophytes, may also help plants grow better in extreme
low-gravity environments, and where nutrients or water could be lacking.
 It has been done by scientists in a quest to find a viable way for astronauts at the International
Space Station (ISS) to grow their own vegetables — and possibly one day on the Moon or Mars.
