    Optoelectronics & Optical Communication Gf 802/2)

    Question 1 is compulsory and attempt any four from remaining questions.


    1) What are the specific advantages of
    (i)A Laser Diode(LD) over an LED as a transmitter of Fiber Optic Communication in long-haul
    photonic networks.
    (ii)an APD over a P-l-N diode as a receiver of Fiber Optic Communication
    (iii) A GRIN Fiber over on Sl fiber
    (iv)lndian Gallium Arsenide P.D.'s over silicon P.D.'s with respect to windows of Fiber Optic
    Communication. (4+3+3+4)
    2) a)Estimate the internal quantam efficiency of an LED whose radiative & non-radiative
    lifelines are 2.5ms and 60 ms respectively.
    b)Draw a neat schematic of an ELED device coupled to a fiber optic cable. What is the role
    played by Epoxy Resin at the interface?
    c)Draw a schematic of a Ruby-laser system, Why is it regarded as a Solid-state laser?(4+6+6)

    3) a)List and define only the principal figures of merit of a photdetector. Mention also their
    inter relations, if any.
    b)Starting from the current generation equivalent circuit of a P-l-N diode, deduce a compact
    expression for the maximum power delivered to a resistive load.(Assume the incidence of
    time varying photon flux). (10 + a)

    4) a)What is the speciality in the structure of RAPD's?


    b)A given silicon RAPD has a quantum efficiency of 65% at a wave-length of 900 nanometers.
    lf 500 nanowatts of optical power produces a final photocurrent of 10.0 microamps, find the
    value of avalanche gain(clearly show the steps of working).
    c)Which elements are responsible for attenuation loss in an optical fiber. GiVe few examples.
    Draw only a labelled schematic of PREFORM preparation step of an optical fiber. (3+6+5)

    5) a)Draw a neat crossection of a fiber optic cable and point out briefly the role of the cladding
    layer.
    b)Name the various types of fiber optic cables in actual usage along with their R.l. profile
    sketches.
    c)Why GRIN fibers enjoy higher bandwidth over Sl fibers. ( 5+6+3)

    5) a) How is an SMfiber designed? Mention some of its specifications.


    b)Estimate the maximum allowable radius for a SM fiber with core & cladding refractive
    indices of 1.53 & 1.50 respectively in the second window of optical communication.
    c) Find out the cut-off wave-length for a Sl fiber to exhibit SM operation when the core
    refractive index and radius are 1.46 & 4.5 microns respectively with the relative index
    difference being 0.25%. (4+4+6)
