Ground, and Site Features

Ground and sub-surface investigations are important for determining soil characteristics, subsurface conditions, and site features prior to development projects. Key terms include in situ investigations to study conditions on site, soil compaction to densify soils by removing air pockets, and land surveys to document topographical details like elevations. Geologic preliminary investigations involve engineering geologists and civil engineers studying subsoil conditions.

MILITARY TECHNOLOGICAL COLLEGE

MTCC3006 Introduction to Civil Engineering

Week 13: Ground and Sub‐surface Investigations

Vocabulary

Ground Investigations: Site investigation to determine the characteristics of the soil, nature of the
ground, and site features.

Feasibility Study: A study carried out prior to a development project in order to establish whether the
proposed system is feasible.

In Situ: It means "on site", or "in place" to describe an event where it takes place.

Soil Compaction: is the process in which a stress applied to a soil causes densification as air is displaced
from the pores between the soil grains.

Labour: The human resource associated with a task or job.

Landfill: The disposal of waste material by burial.

Land Survey: A topographical survey of the land to document various points by distances and angles.

Grading: The levelling off of ground to provide a flat surface.

Grader: Typically a six‐wheeled earth‐moving machine used for grading/levelling the formation level of a
site.

Geology: The study of the earth's crust, with particular reference to its rocks and minerals in relation to
their history.

Layout: The plan positioning of a building. Layout drawings are produced that show the planned position
of the building, walls, furniture, etc.

Geologic Preliminary Investigation: Is a survey of the subsoil conducted by an engineering geologist in
conjunction with a civil engineer.
