Topic Proposal - GROUP 1

(1) The proposed topic aims to determine the different learning styles or study habits of high performing STEM students, especially toward their specialized subjects, and how they differ from average students. (2) The study will compare the study habits of high achievers to low achievers and provide recommendations to STEM students about effective study habits. (3) Previous research has shown a connection between academic performance and learning styles, but more in-depth qualitative research is needed to understand the specific learning styles of high performing STEM students toward their subjects.

Proposed Topic/Title: Learning Styles of High Performing vs, the Average STEM Students toward their Specialized Subjects

General Question/ Objective: It aims to determine the different learnings styles or study habits high performing STEM students have,
especially toward their specialized subjects. The findings could serve as a recommendation to students who will
take STEM to perform better in their academics.
Specific (1) Determine the study habits of high performing STEM students toward their specialized subjects;
Questions/Objectives: (2) compare the study habits of both high achievers to low achiever students;
(3) give recommendations to students, especially in the STEM strand, about the different study habits they can
apply to perform better in their specialized subjects or in academics in general

Research Gap to be There are already a number of studies that prove the significant connection between the learning styles/study
addressed: habits of students to their academic performance. High achiever students tend to have a better learning
styles/study habits than the average students (Sarwa, 2002). However, the recent studies focused only on the
students’ academic performance using quantitative research, thus the specific learning styles of what high
performing STEM students prefer, specifically toward their specialized subjects, and an in-depth study is still
lacking. Therefore, a qualitive research is necessary to determine and differentiate each learning styles of both
high performing students and average students. (Amora et al, 2013; Nonis, 2010; Odiri, 2015; Cerna et al, 2015;
Arieta et al, 2017)
