♦ Driver airbag
♦ Passenger airbag
01
The described airbag system consists of the
actuators, driver airbag, passenger airbag, driver
and passenger side airbags and two front seat
belt tensioners.
These are directly ignited by the airbag control
unit (J234) in the event of a crash as soon as
the given activation criteria are exceeded.
Notes:
♦ The sequence below relates only to the ve-
hicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with pro-
gramme card 6.0.
♦ Use of vehicle system tester V.A.S 1551 or
V.A.G 1551 with programme card 9.0, is simi-
lar with the exception of specific variations
(e.g. different readouts in display, use of
printer).
♦ The function 06 End output must be se-
lected in order to end the diagnosis or to
switch to another address word.
Procedure:
Test of vehicle systems HELP K After completion of the test sequence, the fol-
Enter address word XX lowing readout appears in the display:
Take note!
Only check the cable guides and plug connectors
to ensure that they are seated properly when the
ignition is switched off (also possible disconnec-
tion of the plug connections).
Employees must be electrostatically discharged
before disconnecting the plug connections for the
airbag.
Do not undertake continuity checks or other meas-
urements in the ignition circuit when the airbag
units and belt tighteners are connected up!
Always finish the self-diagnosis while removing
faults or seeking to determine the origin of a fault
before disconnecting and reconnecting the indi-
vidual airbag components, and then undertake a
new one afterwards!
Airbag locking is only allowed on the front pas-
senger side ⇒ Page 01-15.10. Locking of other
airbag units can only be undertaken in exceptional
circumstances and then only after receiving writ-
ten permission from the PST (the Czech Republic)
or from the importer.
Only check the strands of electrical cable for the
airbag system for short-circuiting or interruptions
when the plugs are disconnected on the airbag and
control unit for the airbag, when the ignition is
switched off and the battery is unclamped!
Observe the safety regulations for working in
airbag units when removing and installing the
airbag units ⇒ Page 69-8.
Observe the safety regulations for working on belt
tighteners when removing and installing the belt
tightener ⇒ Page 69-2.2.
Note:
Additional work is to be undertaken when dis-
connecting and re-connecting the battery earth

Notes:
All the possible faults which can be re-
cognised by the control unit and displayed
by the vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552, are
listed in the table on the basis of the 5-digit
fault code.
Ignore the SAE code which may be displayed
on the right next to the fault code number.

you require in the fault table on the basis of
the fault code.
If components are displayed as faulty, first
of all test all the cables and plug connections
to these components, as well as the earth
connections on the basis of the current flow
diagram. Replace the component only if this
inspection also does not reveal any fault. This
applies in particular to faults which are shown
as being sporadic (SP).

Check unlocking:
With the seat belt in released condition the
latch should automatically jump out of the
buckle.
Warning!
Never use lubricants to eliminate noisy or stiff
operation of the buttons on the buckles.
