The world of the 21st century is all about efficiency and technology. What triggers the fast-paced
world is The Mcdonaldization of culture brought by the need for convenience. The term
Mcdonaldization was coined by George Rizer. Mcdonaldization is a process by which the
principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American
society as well as the rest of the world.(Ritzer,1993). The process of Mcdonaldization outlines
the need of efficiency, predictability, increase of control, and replacement of human by
technology also known as dehumanization. The Idea of Mcdonaldization was derived from the
central elements of Max Weber’s theory of Rationalization.
As the world rapidly spin on speed, the conception of mcdonaldization is becoming more and
more acceptable model. Mcdonaldization has taken over the system of education. According to
Canadian journalist, Carl Honore, “The cult of speed” stands out most in the 21st century.
Wherein Education constantly, and rapidly adopt shortcuts which efficiently get a student from
kindergarden to grade 12. On the same hand the predictability, standardized the curriculum and
the way knowledge should be taught, In a sense which requires every student to display the same
skills. He argued that education system should give students enough time and space necessary to
grow into the thoughtful articulate the world desperately needs them to become.
In the context of the Philippines the educational system adapted the process of mcdonaldization.
The efficiency, predictability, increase of control, and replacement of human by technology is
highly observable in the Philippine education system. In the Philippine education system
efficiency is evident when students are assigned to understand things on their own. As stated
earlier, efficiency is specific to the need of the industry or business but is typically advertised as
a benefit to the consumers. Next is calculability, which highlight quantity rather than quality.
The goal of the education should be, to produce professionally qualified people, however due to
the speedy process of education the numbers of graduates produced might not be proficient
enough, that’s quantity over quality. Furthermore, The main purpose of this paper is to explain
the Mcdonalization process of education taking over the Philippines.
History of Mcdonalization
So my prediction is in the near future if this ever keeps up one day Filipinos will think
they are American and slowly but surely the Philippine culture will be extinct we would also
have an identity crisis and once again the true Filipinos will decrease until they disappear.
Education in the Philippines is given by public and private, colleges, universities, and
specialized and professional organizations. Financing for state funded training originates from
the national government. At the basic education level, the Department of Education (DepEd) sets
in general instructive principles and orders government sanctioned tests for the K -12 basic
education system, although private schools are generally free to determine their own curriculum
in accordance with existing laws and Department regulations
On the other hand, at the higher education level, the Commission on Higher Education
(CHED) manages and controls schools and colleges, while the Technical Education and Skills
Development Authority (TESDA) for specialized and professional foundations directs and
authorizes specialized and professional instruction projects and establishments.
By law, instruction is obligatory for a long time (kindergarten and grades 1– 12). These
are gathered into three dimensions, elementary school (kindergarten-grade 6), junior high school
(grades 7– 10), and senior high school (grades 11– 12) they may likewise be grouped into four
key stages, first key stage (kindergarten–grade 3), second key stage (grades 4– 6), third key stage
(grades 7– 10) and fourth key stage (grades 11– 12). Kids enter kindergarten at age 5.
Technology is everywhere entwined in almost every part of our culture. It affects how we
live, work, play, and most importantly learn. With mobile and other wireless devices like the IoT
becoming an increasing requirement across every industry today, it only makes sense that our
schools are also effectively deploying mobile technology in the classroom. However, for many
schools, implementing the latest technology is a difficult strategy to navigate.
Educators are always striving to personalize learning for students. Technology can help
them reach new levels with access to real-time student data, longitudinal information, content,
apps, and more. Technology can help educators create blended learning environments and
leverage digital tools for formative and summative assessments, bringing new models for
learning and teaching to classrooms.
Technology in education and the right devices in students’ hands helps prepare them with
the career and technical skills they need to be successful today and in tomorrow’s workforce.
Relevant learning experiences in STEAM can inspire creativity, help students apply meaning to
their learning, and prepare them for future career opportunities and jobs that haven’t even been
created yet. Specific skills in coding, programming, physical computing, and computational
thinking have become common requirements in the workforce. Though making, students can
gain these skills and hone their problem-solving and critical thinking skills for the 21st century.
Learning by doing with maker mindsets and environments can be very engaging when designed
and integrated with the right technology.
3. Methodology
The goal of this paper is to identify, and explain the cause that leads to a wide range of
process that evaluates the impact of changes on existing norms. Since the research is explanatory,
it would not require any participant of a given population to participate in the study. However, it
would highly rely on theories, and data sources that would further elaborate the study. The
purpose of this research is to identify the cause which results to Mcdonaldization process, and to
further attest that Mcdonaldization of the Education in the Philippine education is indeed taking
its place in the education system. The gathering of sources and synthesizing them with the ideas
congregated from the theory of Mcdonaldization would supplement to the study about the
Mcdonaldization of the Philippine education. The data sources that would be use in this study

study of web portal features as a knowledge management system in school education” It was stated
that The Web development have played an impact with different points of human lives, it made
communication, knowledge dissemination, and Job finding activities much easier.
The web portal is now seen as a gateway of accessibility to education, and as a starting point for
people who shares the interest through the Internet. It is also considered as the type of knowledge
management system which provides a rich space to share and search information as well as
communication services like free email or content provision for the users. Thus the research was
conducted to discover the university needs to the web portal as a necessary tool for students in the
schools to help them in getting the required information.
The study that was conducted in Sri lanka concluded that portals are indeed a solution for
knowledge management. In addition to that, the Philippines has the same view with regards to the use
of technology in further reaching the needed knowledge and information among the students. On
March 2016 Rappler published an article which put an emphasis to ICT resulting in better education for
all. In their statement it was mentioned that The Department of Education recognizes the key role of
information and communications technology (ICT) in improving the state of education. The Internet and
its capacity to hold an infinite number of resources, can provide accessible and comprehensive
education for students, wherever they may be in the country.

makes better access to digital technology which means better access to learning and opportunities.
Jose Maria T. Policarpio, executive director of education publisher Diwa Learning Systems Inc
made a statement that The global outpouring of grief reflects Jobs’ impact on modern life. He blazed
trails in education and understood that today’s learners grasp new technologies intuitively. In her state
she also included that “We have to remember, they learn differently and we need to adapt our modes
of teaching.”
In her statement she was pertaining to the new mode of teaching, which is more of an
accessible type of learning. This includes the usage of technology. The Department of Education DepEd
however made a strategy which supports the aim for a more techonological learning environment.
Technology for Educational purpose The (ICT4E) Strategy Plan. ICT4E aims to integrate ICT into every
school’s curricula to help develop programs, establish infrastructure and come up with a system for
evaluating the program’s effectiveness. Among all its purpose Deped has also strove to deepen the
Educational Technology Unit and conduct literacy training among teachers with the help of technology.
With the help of technology the Philippine education system is expected to get along with the changes
that are happening in, and outside the learning Environment.
The new mode of learning as proposed by DepEd will integrate learning and the use of
technology that will lead to a more comprehensible educational Environment. E-learning is said to be
the inexpensively most convenient way to transfer knowledge according to an accountable Batobalani
Foundation chair Saturnino G. Belen Jr. He also mentioned that “ We do not need to reinvent the wheel
to apply these technologies. For ICT especially, the private sector is in a better position to take up these
initiatives because it has the expertise. You have to have hardware, connectivity, content and also
